As a bet this sprinter at our track club had to race a mile and an 800m runner had to race a 200m 800 guy ran 23 high and sprinter ran a 4:29 mile. I thought this was pretty average for the 800 guy and incredible for the sprinter. this dude has never raced over 200m in his life and jogs a lap to warmup for practice. am I just being optimistic or is this really good? |

It took Jim Ryun four races to get to 4:21. Looks like this guy is in good company. Is he an elite sprinter? If not, he should consider changing events. |

If that is true then put him in an 800m race. With sprinter speed and that kind of strength he could be a great 4/8 or 8/15 guy. |

he isn't elite but isn't bad. Like 10.82 100m PR. only issue is 4:29 isn't competitive at all so he won't even consider it and 10.82 is very competitive. |

That's an amazing range! Sure 4:29 is not that competitive but it was his first one ever. With only 30 miles a week and some longer intervals he could be close to 4:00 |

I wouldn't go as far as to say 4:00, but a 4:29 with basically almost no training (assuming he hasn't done soccer or any other sport beforehand) is astounding. What grade is he in? |

Yeah, I used to do that all the time post college. Go down to a popular jc track and act like I was practicing my starts out of the blocks. Talk spit with some track weenie distance guys about how much harder sprint training was than what they were doing...sure enough...someone would want to make a bet. Sometimes it was an 800, sometimes it was a mile. I'd sucker them in every time, pick up a few hundred bucks by dipping under 4:30. I'd run 46.4, 1:48.3 and 4:08 in college (TT on the mile). No big deal, but I could sprint a decent 200, so I looked the part. It helped that I mediocre enough at middle distance that no one recognized me. |
