Quite a while indeed. Bekele hasn't been training at 100% due to fear of re-injury. I doubt Bekele himself was expecting much faster today.

And let's not forget, Bekele will not be racing a 3000m in London. I personally believe he will defend his 10k title successfully. The 5k will be more closely contested, although he has to be considered a major threat there as well despite today's "slow" performance.

what was his last kilometer like in that 10k last fall?
sub 2:30? no calf pain then. dunno what the issue is. maybe he tweaked it again in training.

Yes, he does.
Talks about how he won't run cross. Or how he'll only run one of the cross races. Then goes and dominates.

On the track he's run some piss poor 1500s and DNF miles. Then he'll run a faster pace for a 5k soon after.

He's putting on a show trying to get his competitors to think his speed won't be good at the Olympics. Nothing wrong with that. It's called psyching the competition out.

Yes, he did.

Off the top of my head, he dnf a 1500 in 2009, then ran 12:56 3 weeks later.

And you must be a troll I'm guessing? And your response will be: "no, I am not."

Bekele doesn't NEED to play mind games. He owns the 5k and 10k WRs and several GOLD medals. He is the GOAT.

I think this is bad news for him. He's been getting beaten more often these days.

More often? He's only lost like two races in the past year and won 2 hasn't he? I think that's pretty good for a guy who's been injured for two years. You make it sound like he's been getting beat by Alan Webb

show me an example of bekele running "a faster pace" for 5k than for a 1500.

Indeed. Just barely in front of Bekele was Edwin Soi, who had a marvelous winter and is almost always a top competitor. More disconcerting is a post I saw earlier which claimed Bekele was clutching his leg after the race, for a lapse back into injury would (obviously) be the worst thing now. However, barring such misfortune, there's no reason to be alarmed, and we'll just have to wait for more racing to see whether something is truly amiss with Bekele. For now, I think, he remains the man to beat, and today was just a slower rust-buster.

1 DNF in 2009

You know, the year he went 6/6 for the Golden League?

This is incredibly rare for Bekele, you need more examples as the past few years have all but been amazing for him, double gold in Beijing and again at the world championships in 2009 along with a golden league title.

You guys are expecting more out of the man? The only person more decorated than him at the olympics are swimmers.

Psyching out the competition would be one charitable explanation. Being a dirty drug cheat would be another less charitable one.
