I'm pretty sure my friend/aquaintence has undiagnosed bipolar disorder... 5/6/2012 7:07PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I have a family member with biplor disorder and know what manic episodes look like. I bumped into a friend (really more like a girl I talked to in class three years ago but never really hang out with) at the bars last night and after talking to her a little while could tell things were a little off, and by the end of the night I was fairly certain she was in the middle a manic episode. It was mild as she wasn't overly delusional, wasn't seeing things or thinking inanimate objects were talking to her, but all the other symptoms were there and were identical to how my family member acts right before they totally lose control and have to be hospitalized. My family member acted exactly like this girl was for about ten years before she had a full blown episode and had to be hospitalized. The girl even told me her mom has bipolar disorder, so I don't think I'm just reading into things too much. I am also fairly sure she's not getting any treatment for it.

I don't really know the girl very well, but after going through what I've gone through with my own family member with bipolar, I would want to prevent anyone from going down that same path and would like to have a talk with her about it, but I'm not sure if that's inappropriate. Obviously no one appreciates someone thinking they're "crazy," though I don't look at it like that at all. Should I try to talk to her about it at all or just go on about my own life?

If you could somehow trigger the full blown manic episode WHILE having sex with her I do believe that you will have a very memorable experience on your hands. Go for it :)

The problem with crazy is that it doesn't know it's crazy. That's also the problem with stupid.

Are you certain that she just wasn't on something? Maybe she was taking prescription meds, maybe she is already on bipolar meds and the drinking made things seem odd? Maybe just alcohol?

It's not your place to say anything. I can't see a reason she would seek counseling based on your advice or recognition of this behavior and I can see a few reasons this won't turn out so well if you say something.

You could be right. She could just be a little crazy though, or maybe she was on some drugs (legal or otherwise) that made her act that way.

As you said, you don't know her very well, so you probably don't know if she's getting help for it or not (if she is indeed bipolar).

I don't think it's a problem if you talk to her about it. "You know the other night at the bar? You were acting a little crazy. Were you...are you alright?"

Just don't lead her down a path where she thinks you're interested in her...that could end up badly for you.

The correct answer is that she is a woman.
