Earlier this year, I moved to a city about 35 miles away from my old home. Soon after moving, I found a good track to run my intervals on.

Since that time, I began noticing a man in his early 20s doing phenomenal workouts. On different days, I saw him running about 40 400 meter repeats at a pretty good pace, doing a 4:08 solo mile time trial, running a 2:36 1000 (with the last 200 done in ~25 seconds), and doing several 100 meter strides in the mid 11's. Almost everyone, from little kids to 60 year old hobby joggers, stared at him in awe as he circled the track. Heck, I even paused my workout to time him.

He's about the same age as me, but I have never seen him compete in any track meet or road race in the area. Locals say he prefers to be left alone - he only gives short responses to questions and doesn't elaborate further. Not to be deterred, I approached him with questions about his background and training after he finished his workout. He said, "Well, I graduated high school in...(sighs). You know, I don't want to think of the past. Right now, I'm a college student majoring in civil engineering. I'm not on the team and I don't have a coach. I just run to stay in shape, have fun, and hopefully get some sense of direction in my life." That happened two weeks ago, and I haven't seen him since.

Thoughts? Any theories behind this? Anyone else heard of or experienced a similar situation?

Well, if he's running 4:08 solo he's good for sub-4:00 in a good race. Not bad for just roughing it.

1.
Sounds like you did more than "pause your workout" to time him. Sounds like you stand there with your Timex on him for hours at a time, day after day. No wonder he doesn't want to talk.

2.
"Man in his early 20s"? Oxymoron. Ask Flagpole.

It is possible that Alan Webb is training at your local track. We need pics.

1/10. It would have been a better troll thread if it had been something more believable than 40 400s. You'd have to actually count them to know how many, which you clearly did not do.

How was his leg speed velocity? Turnover? Was he relaxed?
Trainers or spikes?

If you sat there and counted 40 400's-- ghey.

Terrible dialogue you gave him too.

I said "about" 40 400s. It seemed that he ran one every two minutes. So if he did them in 70 seconds, it would be 70 seconds of running and 50 seconds of rest. My workout lasted for an hour and a half. He started his 400s soon after my warmup and finished them as I was doing my cooldown. Estimated 80 minutes / 2 minutes = 40 repeats. And why would someone do 37 or 41 400s instead of rounding it to something simple like 30 or 40? It's a good ballpark estimate; nothing more, nothing less.

But if you don't want to believe this, it's fine. I'm just wondering if anyone had similar experiences before.

If he's running a 4:08 mile and 11 second 100 meter strides, his leg speed velocity and turnover had better be high.

3/10 for sticking to your guns.

The dialogue was still terrible. Admit it was paraphrased and I might go to 4/10.
But does it have Siri?

But no, not if your guy is a college student... probably too young.
