Verzbicas would have broken Bekele's 10k world record if he would have stuck around. 5/5/2012 9:00PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Firstly, I think that LV is the greatest disappointment ever in US running. He could have been the next Pre, of course Pre wouldn't have quit after facing some tough times, but besides that LV had guts.

Secondly, lets look at the US's two fastest guys ever over 10,000 meters; Chris Solinsky, (26:59.60) and Galen Rupp (26:48.00).

Solinsky ran 8:43.24 in high school. That is 27:15.1 pace if carried over to 10,000 meters. So Solinsky was able to run a 10k at 2.484 seconds per 1600m less than his 3200 pace in high school.

Rupp ran an 8:03.67 3000, or about 8:39.33 for 3200m. That is 27:02.9 pace. So Solinsky was able to run a 10k at 2.385 per 1600m less than his 3200 pace in high school. Get where I'm going???

Transfer it over to LV's 3200 time and say he runs 2.4 faster than he did in high school... 26:07.82.

of course not exactly. BUt LV stated that the reason he didn't want to pursue running was because he would never be able to get to the level of the top. and This correllation should at least point towards <26:30, and that hasn't been done in a while.

Two things. He is not American and his rate of improvement has nothing to do with anybody else's. Look what Cam Levins ran in high school and how much he has improved if LV improved like him he would be a wr holder in college. It just does not work like that.

Cam probably was not training to the best of his ability in high school. LV, like Rupp, was trained by very good coaches and was in a similar situation.

I think that if Verzbicas trained properly and reached his potential and such, sub 27 would have been in the cards. He's more talented than Rupp and Solinsky IMO; he's just a total aerobic monster. However, I don't think Bekele's WR is to his full potential either. I think it should be in the low 26:10's, based off his fitness in 2008. He could have broken them then, in my opinion; he toyed with the fields in the 10K and the 5K, dropping a 12:57 2nd 5K after running a sub 13:10 first 5K, then ripped off a 7:35 last 3K in the 5K. There are no chance he would lose.

doesn't matter, it is highly unlikely (more like impossible) that Bekele will ever run a faster 10k or 5k. And he would be out of his prime by the time Lukas would have been of age.

Even Ritz, who ran his PR in less than ideal conditions (championship final in very hot weather) ran 8:45 3200 pace, his Pr was 8:41.1 in high school. Furthermore, most people consider Ritz to be a threat to the 27:00 barrier if he can stay healthy. Guess what! That would be faster than his 3200 pace in high school as well!

Next up, TIm Nelson, he ran 8:53 in the most competitive state in the US, were weather is ideal and the competition is the hardest... His 27:31 is 8:48 pace... Well who coulda guessed!

They are not running in the american high school system, thus they would be training under much tougher coaches who push them harder much earlier. Virtually every known american 10k runner ended up running it at a faster pace than he did the 3200 in high school.

Tegenkamp ran 8:57 in high school... the one 10k that he ran in his career was 8:47 pace.

Bobby Curtis ran 8:48.39 in high school, his 10k PR is 8:46 pace.

Keep crying about it... When Bekele was Verzbicas's age he was running much faster than Verzbicas did. You say they (East Africans) have much tougher coaches who push them much earlier? Bekele is in a league of his own when it comes to long distance, the only athlete the US has recently produced of comparable talent was Webb. Fail troll is fail, 0/10. Btw, who the hell cares? He's picked the Tri, which he is clearly better at.

Apparently not, since this little experiment shows that anyone who gives the 10k a legit shot post collegiately is practically gauranteed to run it faster than their 3200 pace in high school. Even if he ran it as fast as he did in high school it would put him at a 26:22, which I would say is in Bekele's league.
