I began running in place ("ripping") coming off an injury and find it the closest cross-training to real running, giving 90% of the value with almost no impact. I now work a full-time job on my feet all day, so during the week I do most of my "mileage" as rips, varying cadence, knee-lift, etc.. When I get to my "real" runs on weekends my legs feel fantastic, and have had some of my best training runs in years. Also super easy for barefooting, avoiding pollen, shit ty weather, etc..
I have a setup where I can watch videos (race footage is great) and even read letsrun, while ripping with the headphones on. I have done the entire coverage of the NYCM, and an hour or two is easy with this setup. I figure that it represents about 70-85% of the time equivalent of running, aerobic-wise.
