WAYTAB: CHRIS SOLINSKY, "Kenyans don't like to hurt from 1000m out.." 5/4/2012 1:54PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Anyone know what Chris Solinsky is talking about or agree with him concerning Kenyans in the 5000m and 10000m, not wanting to hurt from 1000m out from the finish? In almost every 5000m and 10000m World and Olympic final the 2nd half has been much faster then the first half.

So what does he mean the Kenyans don't like to hurt, when they are MAIN ones pushing the Ethiopians in the distance events?

http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=26015''

LRC Editor's addition: The quote from Solinsky that the original poster is referring to is as follows:
Kenyans and Ethiopians do not like to hurt for more than 1K out from the finish. If any of us get the urge or strength to take it and push it with 2 miles to go, I think there could be damage done.
That is not what he said. He said they do not like to hurt for MORE than 1k out from the finish. I think he is correctly noting that the E. Africans will not make any significant moves until the last three laps. They certainly to get the pace up the second half, but no one will ever try to pull away from the pack with 7-8 laps to go. He is suggesting that this may be a tactic that might break the E. Africans. Of course, it might not.

" Last year in a 5,000m in Monaco, Ethiopia's Yenew Alamirew sprinted up behind me and threw his whole body into me. I was in midair, and he shoved me right off the track."

Yet another elite runner who does not understand his competitors. How are you going to beat your rivals if you don't understand them?

That was so dumb. How can he whine? He let a 110 or 120 pound ethiopian push him off the track. He has at least 40 pounds on that guy.

way to not finish the quote...

My biggest regret for that race is not getting back on the track and at least running the "A" standard. You learn things, and I definitely learned more from being embarrassed from throwing a fit and being a baby. That's part of racing in Europe. You get pushed

Sounds like he is ready for war!

That is irrelevant because replays show he was never actually pushed off the track. Solinskrap = drama queen

It is not clear that Alamirew even touched Solinksy.

On another note, nobody likes to hurt from more than 1000 meters out, and the comment from Solinsky is really stupid. Plenty of East Africans have won from the front, from Ngugi to Ismael Kirui.
not sure, but...

Did the actual 'body contact' event happen earlier than the clip, back on the turn, and he lost composure and later eventually stepped on the rail and off the track (as seen in the video clip)?

According to this clip from that race, the announcer says Solinsky is pushed twice:

Both Rupp and Solinsky should just watch Centrowitz jr race and learn. Centro just seems to have the art of both staying mentally within himself yet constantly aware of where runners around him are and where they are going to be. If need be he gives a firm shove back to claim his space. If Centro had been running Solinsky's race in Monaco there is no way he would have let himself be cut off.

It is because they don't have to hurt from 1000 out to beat a guy like Solinsky. Last I checked the Kenyans don't do as great as people think in the 5000 and 10000. That is where the Ethiopians truly dominate. This statement also has nothing to do with where the athlete is from. If you watch any world class distance race no one is good enough to run away from the field with more than 1000 to go with out being burned in the final 400.

That's a pretty obnoxious -- and borderline racist -- comment from Mr. Solinsky. He's basically implying that Kenyans and Ethiopians aren't as tough as other elite athletes. The truth, of course, is that no one *likes* to hurt for the last 1000 meters of a race -- but there's no reason to think that Kenyans and Ethiopians are less willing or able to endure it than other athletes.

Used to love this guy.

WTF solinsky? This quote is complete nonsense. It's like saying Michael Jordan doesn't like playing from behind. Or Tiger Woods plays it safe when he is in the lead at a major.

Quit whining about guys who blow you out of the water fair and square

If the race is tactical, it is won by who has the biggest kick. If the race is hard, then the person who wins has the highest level of fitness. Solinsky is nowhere close to either of those things, so nothing short of a miracle would have to occur for him to get a medal.

Not counting last years Worlds if you go back the last 2 Olympics and 3-4 Worlds the Kenyans routinely run away from everyone except the Ethiopian and Hicham El Guerrouj, Bernard Lagat (in the 5000m), and Zersenay T and Moses (10000m). So unless your one of those competitors you're not close enough to make the Kenyans hurt in the last 1000m. Now last year there was a few additions that was able to hang with the Kenyans and beat them but last time I checked it was Chris Solinsky.

So while I applaud his thought on how to possibly beat the Kenyans, why not wait til you have done so before putting down a country that routinely perform much better then you in your event(s)?!

I prefer to think Merga pushed Solinsky. I remember how much fun it was to hate Merga and was almost a disappointment when Alimarew was the culprit.

And seriously, the problem for me isn't that Solinsky didn't finish the race as much as its that he seems to keep trying to justify getting "pushed" off the track by a tiny person. From all the angles I've seen, it certainly is safe to say that Alimarew didn't "Throw his whole body" into him, if he even barely touched him at all. Solinsky went from one of my favorite runners to least favorite runners in a record amount of time, and his further explanation on this race just sinks him lower. Not to say I hope he doesn't do well, just that hes not the kind of person/runner I thought he was.
