Highschool Mile training! 5/1/2012 7:38PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I want to run the mile next year and right now i can barely break 5:30. But, i have an entire year until next season and indoor track in December. Is it possible to break 5 by then? or even get down to like 4:30-4:40?

If you're a boy, yes. I did it without a base & bullshitting half of indoor & half of outdoor.

at the HS level, most kids run a 1600 time
which is 4.8 to 5.0 x the 4x400m split.

to run 4:30 you need ~55 4x400m capability.
the best HS milers run <50 for 400m on the relay.

focus on improving your 400m capability along
with your stamina.

Nope, you only need 57 seconds

57 + 5

1:02 x 2 = a 2:04/800 + 10 = a 2:14 x 2 = 4:28 mile. GS2math

Will you quit asking for e-mails in every darn training advice topic? Or at least be up front that you are merely going to pitch your online coaching business that requires a fee. No likes to be tricked, if you want to promote it, do it up front.

I'm going to be going to like a lower division college that's why i'll be able to run. And thanks for the advice, and that algorithm helps a lot. Our coach is only our coach because of budget cuts and she ran marathons like a few years ago. I went from a 28minute 3 mile to 18:30 in a year, so its plausible i suppose. My goal is just to run varsity on both pretty much

Just keep at it. I knew a high school kid that could barely run sub 12 turn into a 2:15 marathoner. He is a rarity but it is possible.

Put in at least 60 mpw, every week. Run at least 6 days a week for a year, don't be afraid of doubles. If you are consistant, focused and motivated you can go from 5:30 to 4:40. It might take longer than a year but you never know.

If you love running and want to keep competing, there is nothing wrong with community college. I have seen many, many runners mature and blossom into amazing runners at JC. It's a good transition and gives those who just love running but aren't the best a chance to keep competing.

Best of luck man. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't.

This is absolutely terrible advice.

Put in consistent mileage. There's no way to train specifically for the mile for next year right now. Run this summer, run xc, run during the winter, and then worry about your 1600m.

Yeah over the summer i'm gonna buildup and do doubles. And when i'm like around my late 20's i'll probably run a marathon or two. But running is great because it's an escape, and rewarding. If mile doesn't work out i could always do the two mile. The college i'm looking at going to is like a real university, it just doesn't have uber fast people
