Lets get serious for a minute: Cam Levins at the Olympics 4/30/2012 1:52PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
What kind of damage is possible on the world level for this kid?

5000m - 13:18 could make finals but he also has the wheels to match people over the last lap. Is top 5 possible?

10000m - That 27:27 looked WAY too easy for him. He probably could have closed in 52/53 had he moved with 400m to go and not 200m. That being said, Rupp finished 7th in Daegu with a 27:26....

Little to no damage.

He needs to be able to run 52/53 off a series of surges or a slow start with a much faster pickup. That's a lot harder than what he has been doing lately. He'll be crushed pscyhologically if not physically by the bell at the Olympics. Making the final is plenty for him - and there is no shame in that.

We all have no idea how he'll do. 6 months ago nobody would have predicted this. He is completely untested and that is exciting.

Top 5 is very do-able, but only off a slow pace.

Rupp will not allow a slow pace this time.

Rupp 5th. Levins 10th.

yup, the Africans will hammer the last 5k. Sorry to say CL
has never broken 13:00 for 5k, the African have shown that they can and have run a sub 13:00 for the 2nd 5k in a championship 10k.

The Africans will not run this slow build up that we saw last night. They will surge until they are the only ones left for the medals.

So I do not see CL being competive at this years Olympics.

They'll announce a newer, stricter drug testing policy and Rupp will end up sucking it up just like last time.
Consider This

If by "the African[s]" you mean "Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele in 2003", then that is a true statement.

I agree with the general point though. Levins just ran 13:18. Rupp's 10000 PR is 13:24 twice, and he isn't the best guy in the field.
Rupp does not decide

"Rupp will not allow" - LOL

When has Wupp EVER had the gonads to force the issue on the world stage? Please tell me the races where he took the pace to the Africans.

Time-trialling to an AR with coachie-woachie on the infield doesn't count. Coaches aren't allowed trackside to wipe the spittle from your face at the Olympics.

Rupp 5th. Levins 10th.
Tenth would be a monumental achievement for a runner of Levins' ability, and I don't want to deride him, but it's absurd to say that top 5 is "very do-able".

Going back to the last decade worth of championship 10ks, here are the fifth-place finishers:

2011 - Martin Mathathi
2009 - Bernard Kipyego
2008 - Zersenay Tadese
2007 - Josephat Ndambiri
2005 - Martin Mathathi
2004 - Haile Gebrselassie
2003 - John Korir

These athletes are no slouches. The 10,000 is a very competitive race at the championship level when you consider the six Kenyans and Ethiopians, as well as the Ugandans, Eritreans, Qataris and Bahrainians. Even for an athlete with a PB thirty seconds faster than Levins, a top 5 finish is not a lock.

The poster above knows what he is talking about. 8th to 10th is where Levins will finish, similar to where Rupp was finishing at that stage in his career.

Thanks for posting this. Might return some sanity to this thread. Jesus take a look at the PRs of those guys. "No slouches" is an understatement.

10.000 Final will be run first 5k 13-40 - 13-50 and 2nd 5k 13-10 - 13-20....
In Payton they ran first 5k in 13:52
and 2nd 13-35 ,but they picked it up just after 6400m last 3600m was 13-26 pace and he looked very fresh during those last 150m. He could be in the mix for top10

Doubting Cam Levins will cause you to grow an immediate Cam-fro. DO NOT DOUBT "CAPTAIN 6-FINGERS!"

Erhem...ok, now seriously. Cam will drop a 26.42 and finish third in the Olympic 10k. He will be one of the inspirational stories of the Olympics. However, when people realize that his extreme mileage led to the spontaneous growth of a sixth toe on each foot he will be disgraced as a cheater but embraced with a lifetime sponsorship deal by Vibram. Later he will be the subject of Chris McVibram's next novel, "Not Born to Run (but I ran so frickin' much that it looks like I was)"

Rupp is going high 26:30's. The plan is to wipe out any kick from anyone. If Kenenisa Bekele beats him after running that kind of time so be it.
