After Lomong's BOMB, will Teg run the 10k? 4/30/2012 10:18AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I foresee Teg running the 10k at the trials. Rupp is the only lock at this point.

He's got to think he can beat Derrick, Estrada, True, Ritz etc. 5k is too dangerous with Rupp, Lagat and Lomong.

Teg doesn't run the 5k.

It's curious to me that Schumacher found the steeple for Jager and moved Teg to the 10,000 but left Bumbalough in the 5000 where it's looking more and more like he doesn't have the necessary tools to make the Games. Does he not have the strength for the 10 or the athleticism for the steeple? Or do they think he's faster than he's shown so far? Losing to Thomas Farrell, getting torched by Lomong, losing to Teg (who he'd been beating), and only beating Torrence because he went with Lomong - that's gotta be a little discouraging for someone who ran 13:16 over a year ago and has gotten in a lot of solid, uninterrupted training since.

On the one hand, Bumbalough did what he needed to do - get the A Standard (his 13:16 from last year had expired).

However, he probably hoped to be up there with Lomong in the 13:10-12 range rather than getting beat by 5 people, including 2 teammates.

Bumbalough is really really talented, but he runs a lot of his races the same way, he lays way off and the rushes hard at the end. This would be fine if he was winning or even a close second, but it seems it is always for a 4th 5th etc.

He seems to leave an awful lot in the bag so to speak.

13:16 in April when he may have been in even better fitness than that, is really not so bad. It's how he gets there though, he is never really in the race.

Yeah, I'd like to see him go for it like Torrence occasionally. Sure, he might blow up and look like a doofus, but with Torrence, you've got to respect the fact that he thought he could win, that he went for it. Bumbalough always seems a little too timid, and I'm worried it's what stands in the way of him actualizing his potential. I see that as the major difference between him and the other big guns - Derrick, Rupp, Solinsky, Teg, etc. Those guys all appear to think they're going to win every time (even though they frequently don't); Bumbalough never seems to think he can.

Teg 10000m
Teg, Solinsky, Derrick
Rupp misses the team if Ritz isn't pacing.

Torrence 5000m
Lagat Lomong Torrence
Without a pacesetter, Rupp misses the team.

You're seriously predicting Rupp won't make either event. Hahahahaha.

Whats with the pacesetter argument? Rupp has been a kicker for the last 4 years. He can probably close a 28 minute 10k in 1:52/52.

Somewhat agreed. He went for it at the Pre Classic last year, and ended up 2nd to last. He went with Rupp this winter in that 2-mile, and got dropped hard.

If he does some shorter races (1500/3000) leading up to the trials, he should try running riskier and going for it. Could help in Eugene...

Teg should do the 5k. He's a 12:58, 4th place at Worlds type of runner. He got lapped at Worlds in the 10k. He's a medal contender at 5k at his best. 5k trials will come down to Lagat, Lomong, Teg/Bumby/Rupp/Torrence/Derrick. I like Tegenkamps chances to make the 5k, which is his best event. Lomong may still run the 1500.

I think Teg will need to run the 5000. Sure it's his best event, but I don't see him beating Lagat or Rupp, and if Lomong runs it, it's looking like he won't beat him either. So that puts him on the outside looking in. If Lomong doesn't run, then I think Teg's experience will push him ahead of Bumbi, Derrick, Torrence, etc, but I can't imagine Lomong won't run at this point.

Who can say though? Word on the street is that Teg and Bumbi ran their 13:15/13:16 off of strength alone and have barely touched the track. Once they get in solid track work, they should be able to run quite a bit faster. Not sure about Lomong, but I think he trains with Teg and Bumbi, so he should be in the same boat right? Which is scary

Meant to say, "I think Teg will need to run the 10,000. Sure the 5000 is his best event..."

Isn't it nice that we have enough talent in the US to debate who's making the team in the distance events? Thank God for Kennedy, but thank God that era is over.

I like kennedy alot, but he had no speed. Only three american runners, have what it take. Speed, speed endurance and endurance.

the era that is over is slow guys running the 5000/10000m.

you need 3:52 speed or a bit better to win the US trials at either distance. you need to close in <4 to win the 5000m. and the favorite is a guy who runs less mileage than Kennedy
ran to break 13.

if Teg is back in shape (<13 and <27) it is worth noting his kick is outstanding. And Solinsky can outkick Rupp too. Not reaching to say both can beat Rupp.

Derrick has developed well. If he is in 3:55 mile shape at the trials and Rupp has trouble coming up for another peak (or gets cocky and shows up in 27:20 shape, Rupp'll have his hands full.
