This doesn't surprise me. A lot of cyclist can be such a prick. They don't follow the rules of the road while they expect drivers, runners and pedestrian to do so. How about the asshat moutain bikers in the park? Did the guy with camera stop at the stop sign at the beginning of the video. |

However it is very common for bicycles to come up from behind, hit runners and kill them on pedestrian paths. |

This doesn't surprise me. A lot of drivers can be such pricks. They don't follow the rules of the road while they expect cyclists to do so. When was the last time you saw a car come to a dead stop at any intersection when no cross traffic was coming?

I am constantly shocked at the pure stupidity of people riding their bikes on significantly busy streets during 5oclock rush hour. All it takes is one soccer mom texting and not paying attention. I feel , however, that they deserve the road as much as cars IF they also obey the same laws of cars- ie no running stop signs, no cutting through gas stations at busy intersections to avoid waiting at a light, going the correct direction down the street, etc. no doubt, these people are taking their lives into their own hands. Every city ain't Austin! |

You know, if you are going to make a statement like that and then post a link, the link should probably back you up. I quote: If the woman dies, she would be the first pedestrian killed by a cyclist in five years in the Bay Area, according to the Bay Citizen’s Bike Accident Tracker, which charts all bike crashes reported by police between 2005 and 2010. Accidents between pedestrians and bikes are not as frequent as you might think. There were 168 accidents in San Francisco that involved a pedestrian and a cyclist between 2005 and 2010, according to the Tracker. That’s 7 percent of all bike-involved crashes during that time. 1) There is no evidence in the reports or video that the driver did hit them intentionally. Could have veered off while reaching for something or might have been stoned (based on the charges. He intentionally drove off. 2) For the person who blasts the guy for rolling through the Stop sign. Yeah, that is a bad idea. However, it had nothing to do with the incident that occurred 1:40 later. If the cops want to cite him for failure to stop, okay. I can accept that. 3) As for 2, if you are going to post a clip to You Tube you should not incriminate yourself. 4) What if it had been 2 runners, I bet folks here would be singing a different tune? How many of you cross against a red light or jaywalk on a run? |

Rolling through a stop sign is not a bad idea for cyclists. If you slow up and look both ways and are making a right hand turn then it is safer not to stop, because you get rear-ended by some car behind you. It is also better for the flow of traffic if cyclists roll through lights/stop signs.

When you say "obey the same laws of cars", what are you referring to? I see laws broken by cars at absolutely every intersection I pass (running stop signs and lights) and in between as well (speeding). Laws are written for cars. If there is no cross traffic it will be safer for me to cross against a red than to wait until green when all the cars will be accelerating also. Also, some people are riding their bikes at 5:00 rush hour for the same reason people are driving their cars, to get home.

168 cyclist caused accidents with pedestrians in one city in 5 years is not too many for you??????????? You're a !$##ing idiot. |

Also, it is pretty much impossible to actually come up with an accurate figure for such a thing. A big part of my job is tracking safety and system performance metrics for the transportation system in my city. I don't even know how I'd go about trying to come up with a valid count of cyclist/ped accidents. You can pretty much count incidents that resulted in hospitalization and/or generated a police report. Even pretty severe accidents can fail to bring about either of these results. That said, pedestrians probably cause just as many ped/bike accidents as cyclists. Pedestrians often step into bike lanes without looking. |

Don't assume that all cyclist are bad most of us follow the laws. But after seeing this video I would support a law requiring all cars/trucks/motorcycles to have black boxes. Existing vehicles to have them put in or be fined for non-compliance. I'm tired of cyclists getting killed, hit, victim of hit and runs as a result of an inattentive/impaired driver. What pisses me off about this video is nobody stopped to help the two cyclists. |

1) it might not be a safe place to stop. 2) The folks who came along after might just have seen the cyclists with their bikes and not thought that anyone had been hit. Cyclists do crash or have a mechanical. 3) People rarely will help. Tons of social psych studies on this topic. A few decades ago a woman in NYC was raped in a courtyard. Plenty of people heard her cries and screams and no one helped. When you hear of someone doing something extraordinary it makes the news. |

Bicycles are vehicles too and cause fatal accidents with pedestrians. They should not and must not be exempt from the laws and responsibility for their actions. |

Spare me the cars vs. cyclist arguments. There are bad drivers who don't follow traffic laws. There are bad cylists who don't follow traffic laws. Neither one excuses the other. In both cases, it's a matter of idiots not caring about what harm they might do to others. |
