I am going to be travelling a lot and recording music. Is there a particular MacBook and editing program that are best for a beginner trying to do some basic mixing. How about a mic? I really don't want to spend over 1500 if I dont absolutely have to and 1000 or less is preferable. Thanks |

I'd go with a PC... you can get more bang for your buck and you're not limited to Apple only software. My favorite software for recording, mixing, producing music is Ableton Live. |

Apple only? Other then OS X and iTunes all of the software I used on my mac are from other companies. Heck, I even run Microsoft Windows on a VM simulation and some windows software. You can't run OS X apps on a PC. Abelton Live is available as an OS X version. A lot of video and music pros use Macs. PC are an option but not as flexible as a Mac if you want to run both Mac and Windows programs seemlessly. |

Most music professionals use a mac for making/editing music. They have a really good program called logic. But the downside is that the program is 500 alone and the macbook will run you at least 1500 for the right specs to do your work. Id suggest going with a pc if you're on a budget and use another music editing software. They all do the same thing but its like learning a different language. |

I'm not trying to make album quality stuff man. I have had enough PCs to last a lifetime. They suck, they get slow, they get viruses. I hate them to the core. I cannot begin to tell you how much I hate PCs. I want them to burn in hell. |

One thing about using a Mac as my base computer, with Widows running in a Virtual Machine for the occasional PC program I need, is that Windows has fewer problems. I think this has to do with running fewer programs in windows that I used to. I'm not sure but my overall experience is that Windows seems more stable when it is not your primary OS and you only have a few programs installed. Or, maybe it's something about the Mac hardware. But, I think it's really windows being more stable when it is asked to do less. |

If you aren't going for album quality stuff, then go with the pc. Why do you think PCs suck? Because Windows 7 is actually a pretty stable operating system, and its not like Macs dont have their issues as well. My opinion is that if you are on a budget and are just starting out, then go with the PC. There are a ton of programs you can experiment with and you can get a decent computer for a lot less money. |

I went to school for Digital Audio Engineering and have a degree in it. Get yourself a Mac. I just bought a new MacBook Pro for $1400 and I've got Windows 7 running as a virtual machine as stated by a user above. Rarely use Windoze as I've grown accustomed to Macs outperforming PCs in pretty much everything. The Mac I had before this lasted me just over 6 years and now my girlfriend is using it for web browsing; still runs like new. As for being relegated to Mac-only software, there's no such thing anymore. Most major software is made cross-platform. Any legitimate digital workstations are going to be best suited for Mac. Look on Craigslist for used laptops if you're tight on cash. |

Mic - Rode NT1A (awesome mic. hooked mine up into a Joe Meek outboard Compressor and then into the USB pre-amp and could hear a whisper from 20ft. away). USB Pre Amp - M-Audio fast track Pro (Great)2 inputs for Mic & Guitar (electric). Recording - Fruity Loops (producer edition). I've used them all, Pro Tools blah blah blah but like FL. That's All you Really Need. Mic $250ish Fast Track $150 Consider getting a 12 string acoustic/electric. Consider getting a Vox AC15 ($600 ouch) Any Questions? |

Just get a PC. Unless you prefer a Mac. |

I use a Dell Latitude E4200 running MATLAB and Adobe Audition for recording, editing, processing, etc. Macs are good though too especially if you're not interested in understanding the finer points of audio processing and just want something foolproof and easy to use. |

So an operating system will be more stable if it is asked to do less? What an amazing revelation! |
