Ryan Hall Running New York City Marathon This Year 4/25/2012 12:26PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Surprised a thread hasn't been started on this already. If Ryan Hall sneezes usually you guys are all over it.

Him and Kim Smith running NYC in November.

http://www.letsrun.com/2012/hall-nyc-0425.php

And the press release says the Opening Day ceremonies were on live ABC7 in NYC. (Full recap of the tv show at the link above as well as the press release)

Hopefully, Hall will face defending champ Geoffrey Mutai.

Full Discolsure: The NYRR advertised on our site in the last week.

One more thing Khalid Khannouchi's retirement reminded me that Ryan Hall does not have the American record in the marathon.

By not running Chicago he likely won't get it in NYC. In the spring, usually he runs Boston over London so throw out the record attempt in spring 2013 as well.

Hall still has some good years in front of him (he turns 30 this fall) but I'm starting to think the record might last until Galen gives the marathon a shot.

The "Ryan Hall sneezed" threads always get deleted. Nice to see that Ryan will race after the Olympics and not sit out until spring. But I wish he would have held off on commiting to a fall marathon for a bit. Makes you think that he is already looking past the Olympics because the E. Africans will be sending 6 guys with PRs that are very close to the WR and minutes faster than Ryan's OT marathon.

NYC is all about past champions. There is no way they will let Mutai race elsewhere.

Why is this important or relevant?

Rupp will be wasting his time if he persists with track running after this season.

Hall's biggest appearance fee opportunities are the major US marathons. In the fall that means Chicago, two months after the Olympics, or New York which gives him another month. NY seems like the obvious choice.

Meb runs New York every year, so you can count on him being there. I bet Abdi goes for Chicago. I also think that Rupp will run NYC. It's 3 months after the Olympics so there is plenty of time to prepare, and the appearance fee would be way too high to pass up. Then he'd have all winter to get ready for next track season.

Can he not go for AR at Olympics? If he has any shot at a medal he is going to have to run an AR to get it. If the goal is to medal then the goal of an AR is simultaneous.

Wejo, rumor has been circulating the boards (speculation) that Rupp might debut in New York for a hefty appearance fee. I think Salazaar might have officially stated they're chasing the WR in the 10,000m, and that training for a marathon would upset that. Would be cool to see a Rupp - Hall duel over 42.2 kilometers.

Good point. Hall has said that he cannot afford not going out with the front of the race in London, nor can anyone else. This is the post-Wanjiru world.

I know Ryan Hall probably has more money if he does Boston or NYC but if he really is 2:06 or faster now then why doesn't he run anymore fast races. I think if he ran London or Rotterdam or something like that he would be exposed. Its easy to run NYC or Boston where the field is good but not great like London. I would like to see him run another major where top 5 isn't a lock and he really has to work for it. He'll never dispel all the critics unless he runs in top flight races. I'm not saying he hasn't performed well in NYC and Boston but we've seen that. What can he do in a fast race in 2012? Wejo may be correct about the chances of the record being broken. I'll leave it to Rupp cause Hall just seems fine with just running the race that is most financially comfortable instead of running a truly fast race.

fast races don't mean crap when your not on the podium. i'd take a 2:07 for the win over 2:04 for 4th place. i'm going to go out on a limb assuming ryan would agree. the clock is not running against you.

STOP IT NOW. You sound incredibly ignorant when you talk as if Galen is a can't miss in the marathon.

1. Is Galen better or worse than Tadese in the half marathon or cross-country?

2. Alberto has struggled with coaching the marathon.

Galen has a chance to be good, but the lack of respect you give to the event is phenomenal. Hell I know 28:00 type guys that never broke 2:17. Just sayin, that if anyone understands that there is no direct correlation between the 10k and the marathon it should be YOU.

Yes, it might be about more money. And if that is why he runs NYC and Boston, good for him. Why do so many people struggle to accept this - he is a professional athlete who might make desicions based on money. Good for him. Exposed? What the hell does that mean? Dispell critics? No, because the critics are mostly idiots who don't accept the above point that he is a professional who is making career (financially comfortable) decisions. Again, good for him.

I look forward to cheering for him in the Olympics and NYC (and I'm not really a fan).

I think "face" is a nice way to put it when your race pace is five seconds slower than the other guy's...but nonetheless agreed, I'd like to see them both in it. Hall has proven he can run courageously in the right race and might mix it up with the pack until someone surges in Manhattan. Hell, maybe it will be him.

In other news, good to see Kim Smith back at it. She is one of my favorite female runners, although unfortunately one of the blow-up-iest active elites. Nobody can say she doesn't get after it, anyway!

You think? I mean after all, the weather in Chicago versus NYC?...who knows, he might surprise you.........okay, I didn't want to say "just saying" in fear of the criticism on these boards...lol.

007 run - You are missing something on this. Hall doesn't run to please you. Like all successful people he goes where the money is. And why not, an elite only has a few years of professinal running before they are finished. He ran a really fast time in London, perhaps you forgot.

Really? REALLY??

That is the funniest thing I have heard from Salazar yet. And the guy says some ridiculous things.

The sooner Rupp picks up his 5th-8th in London (I'm being generous) and moves on to the marathon, the better for him.

Salazar has shown a profound and baffling inability to coach the marathon, though, so maybe he's just delaying the inevitable failure of Rupp to transition to the distance under him?

No, Salazar said that it's possible that in a year or two Rupp could get down to the 26:20's. They didn't say anything about a WR.

He did say that Rupp got offers to do Chicago or NYC, but he should spend more time on the track because he is improving so much and still has a lot more he can accomplish on the track, and I agree. He said Rupp is chasing 12:40 and 26:2X.

Rupp is in no hurry to move to the marathon. The dude just ran 8:09 indoors for 2 miles, and 26:48 in a stacked field for 10000m. He can do what he wants in the shorter distances. Hell, even for 2016 he'll only be 30 so he could do the 10000m there, and wait to do the marathon at the Olympics until 2020.

For Rupp, I say he should chase his 5000m and 10000m goal times as long as he thinks he is capable of doing it, and not move up to the marathon until after 2016. He should also make it gradual, he would easily smash the US 15K WR and I think he could be the first non-African under 59 minutes in the half marathon before he does the marathon.

As for Hall, good luck. Probably not going to win but I don't think a top 3 finish is beyond him.

Under what circumstances would you take less money for more challenging work? Imagine you're Ray Flynn and you're advising Ryan Hall on his future marathon plans. You could go to a place like New York, which will pay a handsome sum for Hall to show up, where he'll face a balanced field and it will immensely please Asics, or you could have him go to a place like Dubai where it will be doubtlessly fast from the gun, but if he runs a lifetime best he might come away with $10,000 for tenth place.

I don't think it's a hard question.
