Mechanical engineer, graduated a year ago. 40 hours/week average, max 45.

Salary is 50k. Stress is low, but I'm bored here and the whole department effectively just got a 20% pay cut (Surprise! You're only working 4 days a week until things pick up). Time to find a new job, I think.

FWIW I live with an environmental engineer, here are his stats:

How many hours do you work a week? (max, min, avg): 66(once, usually 60 at most), 40, 50. He admits he works more than he has to.

What is your stress level like? Low, he likes his job. Sometimes deadlines are tough, and some clients are tough to deal with, which is frustrating.

Experience and salary? 1 year, 68k

I also want to add, that when the stress is high, it is very very high, but it's only a few weeks a year that it's like that. Probably nothing compared to a doctor, stock trader, or other stressful professions.

Project Engineer. Great Lakes region.
45 hrs/wk
8 years experience
Salary, overtime (not union time-and-a-half), and bonus will bring it to about $90k.
Company also paid for masters.

I know for a fact that I kind of got screwed by coming in relatively close to graduation (started at 50k).

Guy I work with directly each day...
Roughly the same responsibility as me! Maybe a touch more- still no direct reports.
20 years experience, came in after 10 years
Salary, plus same overtime mentioned above, and larger percentage bonus- probably brought in $140k last year.

Seems like I'm in the ballpark

My hours are 60,50,55 no weekends but unpaid lunch and 90 min total commute.

I make 55+Ot +bonus= 65ish

4 years experience, excellent reviews

Feeling worn down from constant 10-11 hour days. I feel like I have too much work and am unable to do a good job on it all do I'm forced to supply mediocre work in the interest of completing everything.

I think it's time to start shopping around

Architects (I am one) max out around 120-130 unless you get into sole practitioner or partner.
You guys complaining about the hours... HA! You are replaceable. It's all about burning you out and replacing you. Unless you keep putting up with it, in which case you'll continue to be fed a few more crumbs here and there to keep it you from straying from the fold.

Very few of us complained about the hours, and most of us say it's low stress. Get off your horse, we know it gets worse.

Another environmental engineer here.

Max - 60 (rare), Min - 40, Average - 41

Experience - 5 years, ~85k including bonuses

Stress - Usually low, only high when dealing with difficult clients or the public who is against a project. A few presentations (at least one a quarter), which can at times be stressful.
