Where can I find an explanation of how one qualifies for NCAA post-season competition in D1 outdoor track & field? |

IDK where they are... but I know them There are two regions... east and west The division line is the mississippi river, except louisiana is also in the east. The top 48 athletes in each region qualify for regionals based on final marks from the outdoor season. Once at regionals, rounds are run, 16 make finals, and the top 12 from each regional site advance to the next round (ie: Nationals) 24 total athletes in each event at the NCAA Meet *note- the multi athletes are not required to compete at NCAA regional competition, but the top 24 are advanced straight to nationals based on regular season marks |

the only part that isn't totally cut and dry is the top 48 part. It isn't the top 48 on the descending order list, but the top 48 to declare. So you might be 70 or 80 deep in the 1500 before you get to the 48th declaration, because many will chose to run 800 or steeple or 5k. |

Top 48 that declare compete in the 1st round. 4 Flights of 12 in the field events, advance to a flight of 16 and the top 12 qualify for NCAA finals. PV/HJ have two pits of 24 competitors moving the bar up at the same time, utlimately until there are 12 remaining. 800 and shorter have 6 heats of 8 advancing 3+6 times to 3 quarter heats advancing 3+3 times from each quarter to the NCAA finals. 1500 has 4 heats of 12 advancing 5+4 times to the quarter round of 2 heats of 12 with the top 5+2 times advancing to the NCAA finals. Steeple is 3 sections of 16 advancing the top 3+3 times to the NCAA finals. 5000 is 2 sections of 24 advancing the top 5+2 times to the NCAA finals. 10000 is one massive race of 48 with the top 12 moving on! |

And relays? |

24 best relay teams declared for each 1st round site will run 3 heats of 8 with the top 2+2 times advancing 6 teams out of each first round site. Also, the geography of the split is defined by the mississippi river except that Illinois and Wisconsin go west and Louisiana heads to the east. |

I meant 8 teams advance from each 1st round to a 16 team NCAA finals...2 heats qualify to an 8 team final final. |
