Hello all, I'm a prospective athlete looking to transfer to Ohio state as well as some other d1 schools next year and hopefully run and compete for them. My question is what are ( if there are any) the Ohio state walk in standards for track and what is the slowest time I could run and still make a team for the 400-1600? Broad question but I've heard multiple answers in different directions. |

If you have to ask you're probably not fast enough..not to be rude |

I know some people who run for them who aren't that fast. Check their XC results Maybe you can see if you can work your ass off the summer before XC season and treat the season opener in September like you're peaking for the state meet. You might have no gas in the tank by late Oct but you'll probably make the team. Plus you might not be top7 anyway so might as well peak early in the season. Then you can lie about your HS track times and bust your ass in the 5k in indoors and outdoors, or at least train with team maybe not race. Coaches do like people who bust their ass off |

I agree except for the part about lying about high school times. Lying to your coach about anything is usually never good because he owns you while you're on that team. If you work your ass off, your high school times won't matter. -RTK |

No I'm just asking what time most schools such as osu would allow for competition. Mainly in the 800. I know for the 400 it's around a 49 low, and the 1600 is a 4:25 I'm just asking for ball park standards. Also my xc time isn't that good, 17:05, but this was during track season off of 800m workouts. And why would I lie about my times? |

You would be MUCH better off going the D3 or D2 route. Those track times would make you a pretty decent D3 runner. |

See my dilemma is that i want the atmosphere of a d1 school with a pretty sports minded or basketball minded history as well, I'm a huge sports fan as well. I hit 2:01 indoors, ran the equivilant of a 4:39 mile in my first meet and split a 53 point two weeks ago. I feel as though I could hit a 1:57-58, 4:25-4:30 and a low 53 or high 52 by the end of my season. I'm at a junior college now and don't plan on Transfering until next spring semester. |

Ran in the Big10 back in the day and I honestly think you're going to need to improve to even walk on, but it all depends on whoever they hire as the new head coach and how many non-scorers he wants around. Minimums to walk on based on my experience: 800m 1:56; 1600m 4:20; 3200 9:30; 5K track 15:30; 5K CC very low 16min. Even then you'll be on the outside looking in to compete. And the experience will NOT be fun if you are getting run into the ground every day. Most guys who came in slower than above ended up quitting. A very, very few improved enough to make a difference, but you'll have to train more without getting injured to make up for having less talent. I was a little better than those times and was a middle of the pack, sometime scorer. ...those times I'm referring to are coming out of high school times. As for 52-53 for 400, that won't make it unless you're a longer distance guy, about 2s too slow for middle distance speed. |

Those 400 times would work for the women's 4x4 probably. |

Yeah I typically was more a mid distance guy, I actually didn't start running the 800/1600 until senior yr in hs and made huge strides. I feel I have potential but who knows. Any other d1 schools anyone could recommend at me looking at? |

Choose a school for 1) matches your academic major / goals; 2) culture / environment you enjoy; 3) running culture you will enjoy and thrive in - i.e. if Ohio MAC schools or similar in region, D2, D3. One thing I recommend highly is to ask questions to the coaches at the schools. They don't want to waste your time or their time. They'll tell you if you do or do not have a chance to run. Asking costs you nothing and the coaches will give you a more exact answer than this message board. Just ask by sending an email. The tone of response and facts therein will give you cues to the culture of the program from the coach himself. |
