ok to resume normal volume and intensity after 4 days completely off? 4/22/2012 2:08PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I needed a physical and mental break from running and took 4 days completely off. I was building mileage and trying to concistently be able to do 80-85 mpw without any problems. Is it ok for me to just jump back into what i was doing?
you'll be fine

You might feel a little sluggish, but you haven't lost any actual fitness. Starting out with an easy run and some strides might help to shake off the rust. Other than that, you should be fine jumping back into it.

One conservative approach is the recommendation in Daniels Running Formula. He suggests that for up to 5 days off, you can return at the same volume, but keep it easy for the same # of days as you were off. In your case, 4 days off = 4 days easy at the same 80-85 mpw volume. Then add back in any intensity you had before if you feel good.

You could likely get away with something more aggressive, but considering it's only 4 days... there's not much downside to being conservative.

Good luck getting back at it.
this is not serious

Is this a serious thread? After 4 days off, you could probably PR because the detraining at that point is much less than the increased function from being fresh.
works for me

Something doesn't add up. If you were truly handling the 80-85 mpw without any problems, then you probably wouldn't have needed a physical & mental break.

One conservatibe approach is the recomendation in Rufus Enduring Formula. He suggests that for up to 5 days off, you can return at the same size, but keep it easy for the # of days as you were taking smaller. In your case,4 days in=4 days easy at the same 10-12 inches per take. Then add back in harder and deep until your feel good.

You could likely get away with something bigger, but considereing it is only 4 days taking ....there is not much pain and soreness in your back extreme.

Good luck getting behind at it.
