Sleep Aids: Do not EVER try "Fusion: Shut Eye" 4/21/2012 9:15AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I know that most people here probably don't even use sleep aids, but no doubt there are a few people here that are in my boat of not being able to get a consistent night's rest.

Do not, under any circumstances, use this product. I had BY FAR the worst dreams I've ever had in my life, and I felt depressed as hell all day.

It's basically a mega dose of melatonin and seditol, and supposedly has a ton of amino acid stuff in it.

If you want to sleep well, try GABA supplements, I find them good.

I dont understand sleep aids.
I take a couple allergy meds and I'm knocked out within 20 minutes.
Why should I pay for sleep meds and allergy pills when I can knock out both problems with the same pill?

That's because the active ingredient in many sleep aids is either the same, or almost exactly the same, main ingredient in many allergy or antihistamine meds. And you will also often find a nearly identical ingredient in motion sickness pills. So..... if you are ever feeling motion sickness (maybe on a boat), need some rest, AND your allergies are kicking ass. Reach for some Diphenhydramine. It may even give you an erection.

(no, I definitely made the lat part up. Unless you are so happy to be feeling better from your lack of sleep, ass-kicking allergies, and motion sickness.....then who knows)

Ambien will put anyone to sleep. It is a very powerful sedative, and like Xanax activates the GABA receptors in the brain. The main difference is Ambien is way more powerful.

Poor decision. Ambien is well known for adverse side effects as well as needing a prescription. Diphenhydramine is cheaper, safer, and easier to access.

Not everyone is responsive to this drug. It does nothing for me, but, there were a lot of medications that had not effect on me. For pain I had to use dilaudid, which basically does nothing now, to shut down some rough stuff after my major surgery last year. Also, I found, over time, they wore off. I try natural stuff and find working out regularly helps me crash much more easily.

Ambien is effective treatment for bipolar disorder as well. I have never had a sedative whip out worries so fast. I mean 20 minutes after taking Ambien, you feel positive, and most importantly happy.

If you take it responsibly Ambien is a helpful medication. I found that the SSRIs are pure crap.

For sleep over the counter stuff is snake oil. It barely works. If it does not break the brain to blood barrier then it won't activate the GABA receptors. Only Ambien and the Benzo break that barrier.

Watch out though, Ambien can become addictive.

If you have trouble sleep get a polysomnography. Sleep Apnea is a highly underdiagnosed condition.
Taking Ambien and various other sleepaid meds could be fatal if you have sleep apnea.

I used to take something called "simply sleep" made by Tylenol. That would work great with minimal effects the next day. I haven't seen it on the shelves recently, and if I take anything now it is Ambien. Medicine affects everyone a little differently.

Melatonin is more effective in small doses. Try 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 mg.

0.5 mg and I'm feeling pretty drowsy in 20 minutes. 1.0 mg is a little too much for me and I feel a little groggy in the morning. But if I've had caffeine after 4 PM, it helps me to go to bed on time.

I think melatonin helps with sleep deprivation for mental performance. If you're training heavy, you probably can't use it to burn the candle at both ends.

Maybe instead of knocking yourself out with pills, you should try to figure out the underlying cause of your sleep issues. I mean, sleep is a natural thing. You're supposed to be able to do it on your own. If you can't, there's something wrong. Treat the problem, not the symptom.

Another ambien user here. I know the underlying cause of my stress - work and family medical issues. I guess I could quit my job, join the occupiers in their quest to seize your assets for themselves, divorce my wife and move somewhere to start anew in a low paying, meaningless job.

Or I could take a sleep aid when I'm having difficulty sleeping.

Quit your job and live in the woods. You'll never need a sleep aid again!

I agree with this, but, I also recognize some people would rather medicate the symptom than address the underlying issue. I found this article interesting:

Also, for natural stuff I use LifeSeasons Anxie-T. A little price ($45 for a bottle of 30 days worth) but it is a good alternative to drugs. I will warn you chances are you will feel it for a good 12 hours. Also, if you are taking a ton of caffeine late in the afternoon, quit. That alone is the cause of a lot of people's problems.
