New Catch Phrase

What an outstanding job by Glenn Randall - sitting in the spot light through the first 4-5 miles at Boston this morning (and then finishing in high 2:3x). Golf Claps for producing a new catch phrase - a GR, Glenn Randall.

I am sure power bar was happy to be front and center though.

Explain to me what you've done that puts you in this position to put Glenn down?

I'm wondering if he got paid a bonus for leading. For a thousand dollars a mile I would have done the same thing.
Sorry to Glenn's BFF

Not positive split a marathon by nearly 30 minutes? Even the Universal Sports broadcaster thought it was riddiculous.

Same thing you've done -- visit a Web site and start typing like a dipshit.

The guy went to Dartmouth, and he didn't just go out with the leaders, he ran far ahead of them. Something tells me he knew he wasn't going to be in the lead once the finish line was in sight.
Possible

This might actually be possible - Powerbar would have received nice press with him 35+ seconds in front of the kenyan's at the 5k mark.

I don't know if it works this way for running, but I think it's somewhat common for pro cyclists to ride in the front of the pack in the Grand Tours (TDF, etc.) to get their sponsors some TV time (even if they don't "belong" in the front of the pack).

I had a buddy pull a Glenn Randall at the Peachtree Road Race in Atl. Took off at about 4:15 pace in nothing but an American flag Speedo, led the race for a few min. before getting swept up by the African studs. He was a funny guy though, not a boob in a tri suit like this Glenn Randall fellow.

Not sure why it wouldn't work for running also. If I was a smaller sponsor I would do something like that. I would think the Powerbar could afford to sponsor some more elite runners though.

Hey guys this is Glenn. You can go ahead and criticize me all you want for blowing up. But the fact is I was leading the Boston Marathon through the 5k mark. How many of you guys can say that you have done that in a World Major Marathon or any marathon for that matter. I was going out trying to hit 2:20, I felt pretty good in the beginning. When I saw I was near the lead I said to myself why not, how many chances do you get to do this. With the guys going out a relatively conservative pace because of the heat I decided to forgoe my plan of running 2:20 and just take the lead. Yes it was relatively short when talking about a marathon but I had my 10 minutes of fame, and I don't regret it.

really?

Ok glenn - if that is you...what gets done by seniors at graduation on a tree?
Congrats

I am sure very very few LR'ers can say they "led" the Boston Marathon (either for 5 yards, 5 minutes or 5 miles). If you accomplished what you wanted (10 minutes of fame) - I believe you did that and you should walk away happy. I am fairly confident many LR'ers can run a 15:04 5K downhill.

I am not entirely sure I understand how irrational pacing would yield a 2:20 (how is a 15:04 5k to open a Marathon a good example of pacing). If your goal was to hit the time, the 10 minutes of fame obviously had nothing to do with it.

Ok say you peaked for Boston and come race time it's obvious that you can't run as fast as you wanted due to the weather. Why not go out hard have some fun then bring it in as a training run. I'm not saying that's what happened but if the opportunity provided itself....

Remember that kid last year in the baa half I think out there windmilling a 15 min first 5k. It's ok to be that guy, running is supposed to be fun once in a while.

Every race I run, I try to lead at least some part of it. Which means the first 100 meters for me.

I definitely understand your perspective.

Had he ran a smart race and ran 2:20 he would have been a top american finisher (and overall finisher for that matter).

I guess it depends on what you care about more. Personally I would have saw the conditions as an opportunity to finish "relatively" higher. Jason Hartmann is a great example of someone that may not be as talented as the top kenyans - he stuck with it and finished 4th OA - no different than Hall in 2011.

I do agree however - running should be fun - and for 99% of us on here , thats all it will ever be. When you are in the Elite corral at the Boston Marathon I would argue things are a touch different.

Clearly not Glenn - if it was, "pretty" would have been spelled "Pwitty..."

The real issue should be this: He was wearing a ridiculous outfit and not only took the lead but gapped the field. When you do something like that the whole camera crew has to shift up and cover it (even if they don't want to). We should question this: if it wasn't so hot would he have done the same thing? What if the field went out in 4:40 instead? Glenn is a decent runner, at guy that placed in the 50s at NCAA DI xc and has run 2:20 or so...but he had no business doing that IMO. He either really wanted attention and/or he was paid by Powerbar for such a stunt.

People bash Hall for taking the lead in marathons and there are people on here defending this doofus?

Thanks to letsrun, he may get more than 10 minutes of fame if "pulling a Glenn Randall" becomes a catch phrase.

I have a cat named doofus. It's such a great word, and I don't here it enough; thanks, Dennis Reynolds.
