Looking for trails like C&O Canal for bike camping 4/15/2012 7:56AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I've biked the C&O Canal Towpath a few times and would like to find similar trails for overnight bike rides. Preferably, it would be something mostly flat in a rural area where I could camp alongside the trail.

Anyone here know of anything similar to the C&O Canal Towpath? I hear the New River Trail in Virginia is a good option.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure about the camping possibilities, but this trail in Quebec is pretty sweet:

I don't think you can camp by the trail, but the VA creeper trail from Abingdon to NC is really nice. Might be shorter than what you're looking for though.

I think theres a trail across Florida or something. http://www.floridatrail.org/Florida-Trail/centralflorida/CFGWest.html

I have never done this one, but have looked into it:

Looks like an ideal, easy, multi-day bike ride and it hooks to the C&O at the end I think.

Greater Allegheny Passage is pretty nice, and passes by some cool places. It's actually joined to the C&O, so I don't know if you've already done it.

Great trail here. Rails to trails on gravel, so best w/ a mtn bike. Wife and I pulled a couple of BOB trailers for a 200 mile round trip from the WA side. Highlights are some beutiful high tressles in the forest, several tunnels (the largest is a 2+ mile tunnel right through the cascades), some great side rides if you're into mtn biking (as well as great whitewater, climbing, and running). You can camp along the trail (established camp sites as well), and also splurge for hotels or B&B's along the route. Some great food along the way as well.

There's a long towpath along the Delaware River. You could stay in New Hope, PA, with Lambertville, NJ across the river.
