Hello everyone, I'm back in the relatively flat lands of upstate NY after a very enjoyable trip to AZ. I did quite a bit of hiking, but was only able to run every other day. I figure I spend enough time working and running, and it's the least I can do to put those in the back seat for a few days. My runs were ~2000 feet up from the 1.5 mile mark of the Bright Angel Trail of the Grand Canyon (as far as my family wanted to venture into the canyon), 5 miles of trails in Flagstaff, and 6+ miles of trails in Sedona. I was starting to get used to the altitude near the end, but my lungs were certainly screaming after the GC run. I returned to good weather here and ran a couple of my favorite 6-7 mile loops on Friday and Saturday. Today's 300s will determine whether I race the 1500m at Cortland State next weekend. I probably should, but the nice thing about only racing once is that I'm still undefeated for the year ;-) Good luck to anyone running Boston! It's about 40k longer than I like to race. As far as racing news, there is of course Nolan's astonishing sub 17 5000m this weekend, and I see that Alisa Harvey ran a 2:16 800m at the George Mason meet. Scott |

Nyloco, Sounds like the Az trip was enjoyable. Glad you got out on the trails in Sedona and in the GC. Running has been challenging for me lately but it seems to be progressing. It's been a while since my body was happy that I went for a run. Still, this weekend, I muddled through a mild 800 session and I joined the Sunday group for a easy run today. |

Greetings, Masters. Glad you had a good trip, Scott. I love that area. Haven't run yet today, but expect to top out around 47-48 for the week. No hard runs, no hills, no strides. I found a book called "The Foundation" about back pain with detailed exercises. I started doing the Basic 5 on Monday which has made me a bit more sore, but in sort of a good way. Still, it's hard to run 1st thing in the morning - I've gotta be up for while. JM |

Nice warmer weather now (most days getting above 50). Makes it easier on old muscles to warm up and feel decent again on daily jaunts down the trails. Developed a little calf tightness after Mondays workout and have been reduced to walking/eliptical/bike for the week. A sign as I hit the big 5-0 this week?! Smart enough to just work around it. Mon - 4x Mile on trail - 5k pace "get healthy - stay healthy" ynot |

Although still quite dizzy from last weekend's 10,000 meters on the track did manage 40 miles this week...mostly slogging (slow jogging)and one very mediocre track workout. Teammate Brian Pilcher (who set an age 55 5000 meter record last weekend) referred me to his rolfer/osteopath/bodyworker whom I shall see tomorrow morning...hoping some of what BP has "rubs" off on me (pun intended) long may you run, MF |

Since the buzzword of the thread seems to be "sore" I'm right with everyone. SORE! Hurdled quite well this morning but I'm starting to ache a bit. I had hurdled only twice in the last two weeks due to bad weather so I guess this is to be expected. Something about the rotational movement of the trail leg really bites me in the left hip/glute area. I have been hitting the weights quite heavily because our past stormy weather washed out all of our track workouts, and as a result I'm feeling quite "bulky." I need some track work to turn all this muscle into speed! This week's weather should cooperate. Run well everyone, and here's an early birthday wish for ynoT.....Happy 50th! You are now a "Half Centurian." |

Welcome to the "sore club" Tony. We begin every day hobbling out of bed. Can get injured just taking off compression socks! Be smarter than ever - like "don't listen to Paulk". 4th week with no Plantar F Issues! BUT. Should have realized intervals with 55 secs rest would flare up some other 52 year-old body part. TFL left side calming down some since Tuesday but it's definitely a slight set back. Hey maybe that's what we should coin for the 50+ Masters. the Set-Back Club. Nah... Way too negative for us over achiever positive thinker types. Good week everyone. And may you Bah-Stan Mara-Tahn-ahs be stay cool in the heat wave to Bolyston Street. KP |

Solid week here in NYC recovering from consecutive race weekends. I had an excellent long tempo that suggests things are coming around. I've had 4 weeks at 60 mpw this year, which is a PR, and I am close to 100% healthy. 4 weeks to the Brooklyn half, one of my key races this year. On the soft side, I read Duel in the Sun this week - after reading about how a hot Boston can hurt you, I hope very few will try to race this thing tomorrow. And it makes me feel a little sorry for the professionals who have to hammer, even if it could possibly do some long term damage. But, more positively, Boston is the spiritual homeland of running - like visiting Cooperstown or Indianapolis - always a day to celebrate the sport. |

Boston 04 did me in. Too hot and was bound and determined to finish. After that marathon, my tenth and final, I easily overheated and never ran the same again. |

A pretty solid week for me, although I wussed out and only did one hard workout. Still running ~65 miles/week. I did a short tempo run Tuesday (2 x 10 min. with 1 min. jog between) as I was really tired (not enough sleep). You'd think I'd learn. Had a fabulous long run today. It was fairly sunny and warm-ish and the trail was just the right balance of soft/firm. Lots of trees down so I had to go over/under or hurdle quite a few times, but somehow I managed to run quite a bit faster than I have been running this route. I felt nice and strong, too. Weight loss continues at its glacial pace, but there is a real difference. I wonder when I'll decide to race again? KP - still wearing the dorky compression sleeves as insurance. Thanks for the tip. I need to keep up on my stretches (or find a regular massage) and I'm wondering what the best way to build strength in my legs is - squats? lunges? weights? Don't really have the budget for a fitness club and have been doing little hand weights for my arms. |

Tony, congrats on the impending birthday. Any ambitious track plans? I hit 67 miles for the second week in a row and continue to slowly build mileage and long run while dealing with a sore right achilles/heel that has been hanging around since indoor nationals. Ran an 8k on a quite hilly course in Atlanta. 1st mile for me was 5:45 and I was in the lead pack! Took the lead and held it to the half way mark. Passed by a teammate from the open team and 400 meters from the end passed by one more youngster. 3rd OA and 1st master as I ran 27:32 to the 27:11 and 27:26 of the other two. Not race sharp. Time to start shifting training a bit for a 3k on the track in early May. Have a great week and enjoy the spring! |

Hi all, Happy Birthday to Tony - sounds like there will be some amazing V50 1500 times coming soon. And good luck to anyone running Boston... Life got a bit busy and I dropped off the board for a while (and cut back to 45-50mpw), but I just got back from an Easter break in Gran Canaria - a lovely Spanish island off the African coast, highly popular with athletes on warm weather training camps! The weather wasn't good enough for sunbathing but With six miles of perfect beach and a couple of square miles of dunes, I indulged all my Herb Elliott fantasies, and tried to "sprint" up a few dunes with my son, usually managing about three steps before I slowed to a walk. Running down them is lots of fun, though. I also managed an epic 6x4min barefoot along the beach. Something must have worked because a bunch of aches I have had in my feet and lower legs for a year seem to have gone, and I took 15sec off my PR for the local 5k time trial on Saturday morning. Now if only I could fit in a track session or two before the season starts. |

Happy birthday, Tony! I hope you can make it to Hartshorne now that you're in a kindler, gentler age group. 300s went well yesterday (10 at 50 avg, 1 min recov), but even though the weather will be Boston-like today (sunny and in the 80s), it's supposed to drop back in the 40s this weekend. I'd rather not risk running fast in cool weather for an inconsequential meet, but maybe the weather gods will change their minds. |

TFL Help. Serious question. How do I manage this TFL Strain? Tweeked it 6 days ago. Could hardly walk right 2 days following. Didnt run a step 4 days. Yesterday and today it flares up hot after about 10mins of running no matter what pace. All suggestions for solution greatly appreciated. KP |

thanks, and happy birthday to Tony! I was hoping to be under 2:50, so in that sense 2:53:50 (net) was not great, but under the circumstances I was happy with it. As everyone has heard, it was warm (I saw 84 for instance on bank thermometer late in the race), and the direct sunlight was oppressive. I have a major sunburn to remember it by, as well as a couple of toe blisters. Thankfully, it was not too muggy. I'd intended to start slow and then see how I felt, but somehow the downhill start and crowd around me got me out at about 6:15/mile for first 3 miles. After that I deliberately slowed down and ran fairly evenly (slower on uphills of course) the rest of the way. Fantastic crowd support. cold wet sponges, ice, sprinklers, between-aid-stations water......Besides the screaming (Wellesley), cheering, and high fives (everywhere), the people of the Commonwealth of MA really helped us out in managing the heat. have a great week, Dave |
