Good for him

Pretty awesome. Although it makes you feel kind of shitty about your own inability to overcome comparatively trivial (at least seemingly so) overuse injuries. But at least some of us have resilient bodies.

He didn't die eight times. He suffered cardiac arrest eight times, or perhaps more likely received eight total cardioversions. But "man who died eight times to run boston" sounds a lot cooler than "man who got injured really badly in car accident to run boston" to laypeople. Good luck to him at any rate.

Great story - however he didn't time qualify for Boston according to online race results.

Dead runners don't need to qualify.

I read it as if in order to run Boston he'd died 8 times.

I knew the qualification was relatively tough and people weren't too happy about it, but this is perhaps pushing it.

He wasn't brain dead. He suffered grievous injuries and cardiac arrest, but was not totally devoid of life.

Paul Melby, a 35 year old did qualify for his first Boston last May at the Lake Wobegon trail marathon in Minnesota. After crossing the finish line, he took a few steps then dropped dead from a heart attack. He could not be revived.

I thought this thread would be about a guy who ran 8 marathons where he went out at 3:10 pace and blowing up before finally getting the qualifier.

If you are watching the race remember, hands only. Just compression. Some one should bring an AED as well.

Brain dead is not dead dead, medically speaking. And no one is ever totally devoid of life.

Okay smarty pants, so I think we can then all agree upon the fact that he was heart dead, which is the true measure of death.
