I'm running 1:00 slower than I should be for 5k, please help.... 4/7/2012 11:13PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I should be running around 15:00 these days, but I raced a 16:00 today. I take iron, a daily multivitamin, get lots of sleep, and eat pretty healthy.

I'm coming off of injury, so I don't expect to be in PR shape, but I should be faster than this. I ran 31:30 for 10k in XC when I was in peak shape.... 15:30 should be cake on the track, even off of a smaller base. I'm frustrated and have no explanation for what's going on.

Ideas?

What I used to do when I knew I was in better shape than I was producing in races was to sacrifice some races knowing I may blow up. If you think you can run 5k in 15, next race tell yourself that you will run 4k at that pace and be willing to die after that...or who know run 15. I find a lot of guys think of the whole distance, when if they could suck it up to a point they may be better off. Run 1200 of a 1500 and hang on for dear life in the end, it works - sometimes.

Well I hit the first 1600m yesterday in 4:50 and then fell apart. I slowed to 5:20 pace and couldn't get out of that rut. That should never happen if I have any kind of miles under my belt.

I'm seeing a doctor tomorrow... Obviously I'll ask about getting my iron tested, but is there anything else I should bring up?

Well, strangely enough I once had an athlete who was doing everything "right" (eating, sleep, workouts) and yet was not running 5,000 within a minute of what she should have been. Turned out she had a small, congenital hole in her heart (between chambers) that, in essence, meant she was always racing "at altitude." She was good with any kind of interrupted work (intervals, fartlek, repetition work), because she was fit enough to recover quickly; but she just couldn't sustain a decent pace past a few minutes.

This never showed up in the (rather cursory) sports physicals that she'd had through high school and college. So if you're getting your iron checked (smart idea), ask for a *careful* heart check as well. Probably nothing there, but doesn't hurt to check.

Have you been doing a decent amount of training work at 5,000m race pace, just to have that skill? If so, yeah, your most likely explanation is insufficient recoveries.
(If NOT, you may just feel awkward, and run inefficiently, at 72/400 pace.)

You're not a vegetarian, right?

Have you ever run fast on the track or have you always been better at XC?
