I am surprised this isn't featured on the LetsRun main page report from Stanford. Certainly the performance of the meet.

Haile Gebrselassie 2:03:59 Marathon at age 35, 27:06 10k at age 35, and 2:08:17 Marathon at age 38!

Paul Tergat 2:10:22 Marathon at age 40!

Bernard Lagat 12:53.60 5k at age 37!

When put into perspective, the 28:57 isn't particularly impressive.

The world record for 10000 m by a 40-yr-old is 28:30.88. Kevin's run was pretty good.

In fact, it looks like it was the all-time 9th-best by a 40-yr-old.

when the US record was 30:04, I would say it's a great run. What is Castille's lifetime best??

Because near 40 yr olds split that in their marathons

Big difference between 35 and 40. Even 37 and 40. You'll see.

I'm sure that Kevin will be devastated that Letsrun posters held him up against Geb and Lagat and found him wanting.

Yes but that is near 40 yr olds that are the best in the world. This is impressive because while this guy is a very good runner, he was not the best in the world when younger and now he is.

Freak! Ran against, or more like, well behind him, last week @ CBAD. He was cruising the whole way.

And to all the haters - seriously? Turn 40, toe the line and post a time that remotely sniffs this amazing one, then critique til your heart's content. Better yet, run sub 29 period, which none of you can do or have done. Otherwise, SHUT UP and step aside. You are not worthy.

Relax 40 year olds.
I wasn't hating on his performance. I just dont find it that impressive when there are people his age splitting that in marathons (if Tergat ran that time when he was 40). That doesn't mean I'm hating. I don't see how you see it's that impressive either when someone can do it 4 times in a row.

Chill and think about it for a second. It's a soft record. It's like getting excited over a "fastest time so far this year in the world" in January.

Congrats to him on his pr.

IMHO no sub 29 effort is "soft" much less one by a master. Chilled for sure, but armed with difficult to refute empirical evidence. If it is 9th all time, how is it soft? Also want to know how many 40+ y/os have split this mark on their way to a mare or any distance when we know only 8 others have bested it @ the actual distance? Perhaps a misinterpretation of your post (us old guys are a bit senile), but you make it sound as if it's happening every year when I'm doubting it ever has, or if it has, it is a once in every 50 year or so occurrence. Facts please.
