Most Talented running family ever? 4/5/2012 10:20AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
In your opinion what is the most talented running family ever?

I would have to go with the Howards. In the 70s/80s they dominated track and field, went on to win multiple olympic medals and still hold the 4x400 high school recrods.

A short story about them from 1985
http://articles.latimes.com/1985-05-18/sports/sp-18066_1_gold-medal

In 1979, when Denean was a freshman, Tina was a sophomore, Sherri was a junior and Arta was a senior at San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino, the girls practiced what their father preached. In their first year as a mile-relay team, the Howard sisters set four national records in four weeks, breaking their own record every weekend for a month until they reached--and won--the state finals.

In 1980, they moved to Granada Hills. While attending Kennedy High, Sherri and Denean finished first and third in the Olympic Trials, earning berths on the U.S. women's 400-meter relay team. Last summer, they both won gold medals in the Olympics. It was the first time two sisters represented the United States on an Olympic track in the same event; naturally, it was also the first time two sisters won gold medals in the same track event.

Sherri and Denean, representing Cal State Los Angeles, will compete today in the Pepsi Invitational track meet at UCLA's Drake Stadium. Denean will run in the 400 and Sherri will run either the 200 or 400.

Eugene, of course, is still their coach.

Last year, Sherri ran an Olympic-record 400-meter relay split: 48.83 seconds. Remarkably, she set the mark while running with two stress fractures in her left foot.

WOmen cant run that healthy now...

The Konchellah family:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yusuf_Saad_Kamel

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Konchellah

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Konchellah

Father and son have 4 World Championship medals between them (2 each). Dad two golds in the 800m. Son gold in 1500m and bronze in the 800m. Billy's brother has also run 1:42 for 800m.

This family has two 1:42 and one 1:43 800m runners! Imagine running a 1:43.06 and winning two World Championship 800m titles and being only the third fastest 800m runner in your family.

The Gebrselassie family won't win, but I thought it was worth mentioning that Haile G. has a brother who ran a 2:13 marathon (back when that was even more impressive than it is today).

What about the Centrowitz family? Matt Sr., Matt Jr. and Lauren make up a pretty good family team that includes both genders.

Several people have mentioned good international candidates, I'm just gonna stick w/ US candidate families, since I know them better. Here are some contenders:

Carl and Carol Lewis
Joyners (Al and Jackie)
Clarks
Harrisons
Centrowitz
Shalane Flanagan and Mom (forget her name off my head)

The Lewis def are a good bunch..how good was Carol Lewis? Carl gets all the talk, what events did she do and why is she not as commercialized as King Carl?

The Yoners and if you wanna add Flo-jo
Alvin and Calvin Harrison were drug cheats right, even in high school its believed?

Carol was a long jumper.

She set the national prep record for indoor long jump.
She was a four time national champion.
She competed (but did not medal) at the 1984 and 1988 games.
Won one NCAA championship and a bronze at 1983 World Championships.
Still the American Junior record holder.
Was a American record holder at one time.

I would probably go with the Joyners as they were both Gold Medal winners.

No; Sam Bair, Sr. and Jr., and Matt Centrowitz Sr. and Jr. are two examples off the top of my head.

Also, Shalanes mom was ok, back when women didn't run seriously, her Dad was even better, he ran for the US on the world XC team, also ran around 29:00 for 10k on the roads.

Hunky's obit. doesn't tell you much about the success of the kids, but they all ran the Honolulu Marathon back in the early 70's and were setting age division world records
and were listed in the Runner's World Annual issues.
Kenny Moore also wrote about them in Sports Illustrated.

June of course, was the first woman's winner in 1973
http://www.honolulumarathon.org/?s=1973
Jerold, followed in his Dad's footsteps and became a medical doctor and is one of only two survivors left...
that have run every Honolulu Marathon since 1973.
http://www.honolulumarathon.org/?s=halloffame

So, Mom & Dad ran and all three boys and all three girls did marathons. Quantity over quality?
