It's Official - 9:00 Is What 9:15 Was 20 Years Ago - 16 Boys Break 9:00 At Arcadia 4/8/2012 11:00PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
What are thoughts/predictions on this years Arcadia field for the Boys 3200? If people could give predictions with places and times, that'd be great! I would if I could, but if someone/maybe a few people could give a synopsis of maybe everyone in the race, just so we know a little about the, that'd be awesome!

Futsum has always been much much MUCH stronger in Cross Country than on the track.

Although part of this might just be because he's never actually raced any decent competition during the track season, while at the very least, he had Verzbicas and Cheserek during the end of cross country.

You're right, he is definitely better at longer distances, but a large part of the reason he hasn't posted any great times in track is that he hasn't run in many big races.

He ran 8:56 last year in a sit and kick race running a 60 second last 400.

This year he has already run a 1:54.88 800 doubling off of a 4:25 1600 then running a 51 high 400 split in the same meet, so he has some speed. I think he can run at least mid 8:40s and probably low 8:40s.

Ok so lets say futsum does run 8:4x and easily runs away with it. What about the rest of the pack, who/how many break nine?

Why would we say that? If he runs 8:4x, he probably won't easily run away with it; if he easily runs away with it, he probably won't run just 8:4x.

Yea but Alan Webb ran a 1:54 and he couldn't touch 8:40 right now with a 3 inch pole.

Watch for Bernie Montoya - junior from AZ. He ran 4:08.8 1600 and followed it an hour later with a low 1:53 at Chandler under perfect conditions, and was 10th at NXN, but has never really run a good 3200. No idea what he will do, but if he's on, he could also be up there at least sub 9.

It's much different for a mid distance guy to run that and a strictly distance guy like Futsum to run that. The 800 is FAR from Futsum's specialty so the fact that he ran that fast for the 800 on somewhat tired legs tells me he is in tremendous shape. A lot will depend on how the race goes out though. I doubt Futsum will try to take over until the last 2 laps just based on how he's run in the past.

I have Montoya right at 9:00, he's shown he's got the speed in the 16/half mile, and his XC credentials really stand out, but as you said hasn't really run a good 32.

Graham will easily crack the top 10 but I don't think he'll do much more than that. I can see runners such as Armstrong, Nowak Farnsworth and even Jonah Diaz beating him.

Thomas Joyce might surprise people, he ran a 1:58.37 800m then
the next week he ran a 4:11.77 mile (4:10.35 1600 split).

Darren Fahy.

Putting times aside he is by far the best racer of all of them. Undefeated in cross country with the exception of nationals.

Plus he's got speed (60 last lap at state last year), and his times this year (4:08.15 1600m/ 9:01.66 2-mile) show he'll be right there with the leaders.

And don't forget he out-kicked a respectable field at Brooks this year which included Jonah Diaz, Danny Martinez, and Luis Luna.
