http://www.flashresults.com/2012_Meets/outdoor/04-06-DukeInvite/duke_program.pdf Looks like Beach is finally making his first open mid distance run of his collegiate career - running the open 800 at Duke Invite. Could be interesting given letsruns obsession with wanting him to run mid distance instead of decathlon/heptathlon. Predictions? |

i think he split 1:47.7 (?) last year and went 2:23 indoors at the end of the hept could definitely see 1:48 or faster open |

He had a great split last year when he set the Hept 1000m mark at 2:27. Now he has run 2:23. I am not sure what has happened to his 400 speed, but if it is at least as good, he could (eventually, not necessarily in his first meet) run faster than his relay split in an open 800 and maybe by a second or more. However, that makes him a good 800 guy but with little chance of going from 30th in the US to top-5, while he could hit top 5. Put another way, he is never going to win the NCAA 800 and he just won the NCAA Hept. |

He Opened the outdoor season in 47.81, so he should be ready for a sub 1:50 pr at the vest least. Given good conditions, i'd be willing to bet on 1:47.5-1:49.5. I wouldn't be shocked to see him go faster, but i give it a slim chance. |

I doubt he'd be running it unless he has been training for it/in good shape for it. Multi-eventers usually don't enter into single events in a meet unless they're hoping to do really well. I say 1:47.15 |

Funny to see people picking some mediocre multi-eventer to run faster than one of the fastest US guys we've had in decades in an upcoming open 800m. Seriously, if Webb can't beat a decathlete in an event where he won a Golden League event, those spikes need to be mounted for good...and this is coming from a guy who believes he has 6-8 good years left if he nutted up. |

Ummm, how do you think they compete then? Collegiate deca/hept's do on average 2-3 multi comp's/season... the majority of their competitions are basic meets. You know zero about the multi's, and some are now dumber for having read your post. Thanks for playing. |

mediocre multi eventer? And Alan Webb? Two of the dumbest statements ever.... Beach is one of the most unique athletic specimens of all time and finished 2nd as a sophomore in the decathlon and 1st in the heptathlon at the NCAA championships. He has also ran a solo 1000 in 2:23 where he ran 28s for 4 laps solo to close in 30, so with competition would be around the college record in that event. On top of even bringing up the whole Alan Webb... haha.. he has ran like 1:54.17 multiple times in the 800 this year and I just watched him try to run a 1500 today where he was leading a pack that ran 3:46.85 at 800m and he ended up dying so much he ran a 3:54.08... both of which are times he should be able to run while jogging backwards! |
