Up until a decade or so ago, America was the last place on Earth that still actually resembled a free country. We keep growing and growing our government, expanding its control over the economy and every aspect of our lives for the alleged purpose of "fixing" problems caused by too much freedom. Then, when things inevitably get worse as a result of acts of government, the statists still blame freedom for all our problems and call for even more government controls. The idea of gigantic government is now so widely accepted that the only difference between the conservative and liberal parties is how aggressive they want the expansion of government to be. The Republicans want to grow the government at an extremely aggressive rate over time, while the Democrats want an outright government takeover of everything starting yesterday. Because the Republicans want to grow the government slightly slower than the Democrats would prefer, the Democrats falsely associate the Republicans with "free market" and "limited government" philosophy and point to period of Republican leadership as evidence of the failure of freedom. What a miserable country we've turned America into! We could have had an awesome country with peace, prosperity and opportunity, but now we're about to go bankrupt and suffer a horrific depression because we embraced the idea that freedom is evil and government is to be the ruler of human life. To the so-called conservatives: you have failed to prevent the enlargement of the state. Instead of defending economic freedom and limited government like you promised, you pandered to bible thumpers and led an unprecedented assault on personal liberties in the name of combatting non-existent terrorist threats. To the liberals: you are simply the stupidest and most evil people I have ever seen; you are no longer even consistently anti-war or socially liberal, instead you are solely focused on socializing, nationalizing and destroying everything in the name of enforcing your perverse concept of "equality" (that is, equality of misery and suffering). You can't die soon enough! |

Stop whining and do something. That's the problem, you expect everyone else to fix it. |

While I agree he's just another whiny piss-ant, since he clearly has no idea how the country, the government, or any of the political parties works, he wouldn't be my go-to guy for doing anything outside of shutting the f**k up. |

I don't think its the size of government it's effectiveness. The whole Denmark or Somalia question that comes up here from time to time get's raised in my mind. In some ways the state can make ppl more free. Just think of all those pesky labor standards and sanitation standards that improved quality of life for many people at the turn of the last century. A well though out single payer health care system would be less of a burden to businesses and would promote risk taking. My father had a few really innovative ideas to start his own auto business but we were dependent on his benefits when we were growing up so he never took the risk of leaving his corporate job. A world class public education system (like we used to have) is tremendously empowering. Our current system is a nanny state for the über poor and the über rich. With everyone in the middle footing the bill and getting very little to show for it. |

first thing, that giant block paragraph is atrocious. second thing, if gov't sucks so bad, then go back to hunting and gathering and see how much better things will be. ill make sure to massacre your tribe if you come hunt on my land. may the corn gods curse your kind so that you will never be able to grow corn! personally, i prefer going to the supermarket to buy my food. then i dont need to worry about sacrificing my first born to appease the corn gods. the only battles i have to fight are against the soccer moms in the aisles of stop n' shop to make sure i get the last box of cinnamon toast crunch. trust me, im not a huge fan of our government. no government is perfect, but ours still is better than most, and we live a much better life than most. stop whining. a friend of mine moved here from africa to escape a civil war (no he isnt a runner) and huge violations of basic human rights. here, people complain when their $200,000 paycheck isnt enough, and they are forced to pull their kids out of private school and sell their second house and boat. sure, our government could do a better job. but im still staying here, cuz our gov't is a lot better than no gov't at all. |

how did you wind up at hunting and gathering? do you really think government is responsible for all our technological advancements? the OP was suggesting limited government, not anarchy. i don't know why people continue to think that libertarian ideas would somehow set us back 500 years. a truly free market would lead to unprecedented levels of advancement. |

ALL government is limited government. Can you be more specific? |

The OP is right about both major parties being more or less the same. A lot of politics is one side painting the other as the boogeyman, which does no one any good. |
