So I just sold a VW Golf with 128K miles but well maintained for $1000 over KBB. When I put it up for sale I didn't know what KBB value was, but just looked it up now. I actually feel guilty. What is wrong with me? I've always bought used cars and well under KBB. So I feel like karma is going to mug me when I least expect it. |

If someone's too dumb to look up the KBB value you probably did them a favor by selling them a working car. |

Cars and houses are worth whatever somebody is willing to buy them for, not what a website or anybody else says. KBB might say your car is worth $7,000 but if you can't get somebody to pay more than $6,000, well guess what? Your car is only worth $6,000. |

Don't feel bad about over-pricing anything that's not necessary to live. Cars, gas, houses with more than 1 bedroom, clothing, etc. |

Does KBB do local pricing? Could be that in your area Trek Golfs are relatively rare. Also, it's not like you tried to cheat the dude. |

So these are the things I am telling myself. I should be psyched right? Couple of beers, a night's rest and all will be well. Funny thing is I had people lined up to check out the car. I live in a pretty low cost of living area. At least I sold him a solid car that will go 200+K if he just changes the oil. A few years ago I quit semiconductor R&D for academia. I think I may be a commie. F-it. Beer me. |

Maybe he wanted to buy it for more than its worth. Maybe the next guy who was going to look at it would have paid more. |

Just thought I would update this thread: So the guy I sold the car to, texts me not one week later with: "The transmission just $hit the bed. Wanna buy a volkswagen?" You can't make this stuff up. So of course, I am now feeling miserable. But completely confused. I mean, WTF? Sure enough, the transmission tanked after he owned the car for exactly 9 days. I had the inspection done and even repaired some stuff that was not required before I sold it. Never had any transmission issues... I am protected from lemon laws etc, but apparently my bad karma missed me and cracked this guy right in the back of the head. I called him right away and made it clear that there was no issues when I owned the car. But I did offer him a couple hundred bucks after the work was done on the car. (I am not handing him cash, but I will help by paying a shop directly.) He was relieved by this but has not contacted me in the past 2.5 weeks. Wonder if he was just trying to bilk some money out of me. I know all of you would say, don't even think about giving this guy money. Of course, not. But I do want to do the right thing. If he doesn't get back in touch with me with a bill soon, trust me, I am washing my hands of this thing. |

It is a used car, he bought it as-is. You might feel bad and appears that you did not deceive the buyer on purpose. If you knew it had issues, than your a dick. I would stay out of it and not offer anything or get involved. The deal is done. As for KBB values, sometimes they undervalue cars. Just like it has been said earlier, it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. |

if you really feel bad about taking his "extra $1,000", and worried about karmic forces messing you up later, why not pay that full $1,000 towards getting a new transmission put in? |

Well, tongue-in-cheek board posting aside, I did contemplate this option briefly. But I don't know if this guy decided to race his buddies in the car or what. Doesn't really make sense to me that the transmission would tank so soon. I took good care of the car, but it is still 15yrs old and I drove it everywhere. The buyer is a young guy and is using the car for work so I am willing to help, even though I feel no responsibility for the transmission failure. Sure I could have said, tough $hit, kid, you are on your own. Honestly, may be my paternal instincts kicking in. (Yeah, I have two kids that I gush over.) I don't really believe in karma, but believe in "doing the right thing" whatever that might mean. Here, my take is offer the kid a couple hundred bucks because I know he is strapped, paid directly to the shop that does the repair. Would you have acted differently? Given the immediate response I got on craigslist, I think kbb is off on this one. If I felt like I was responsible for the transmission or knew about it beforehand, I would have disclosed or fixed it prior to sale. |
