Delano Williams, the sprint sensation from Turk and Caicos is seeking for Brit Passport before UK 2012 Olympic Trials 3/30/2012 9:37PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
He's 18 and beat all the young Jamaican rising stars (Odean Skeen, Jazeel Murphy, O'dail Todd, etc) in JAM HS Championships.

But reports said that Turk and Caicos doesn't have an Olympic Federation...so he will run @UK Trials. He probably could make the team in 200m...but not in 100m (the pool is already filled with Chambers, Devonish, MLF, Tyrone Edgar, Pickering, etc)...in 200m they are pretty weak (only Christian Malcom has little chances to make the finals in London)

Another "plastic Brit"?

wasn't enough with Mo Farah?

What's going on there? they don't produce young talents anymore? Another Coe? Another Cram, Ovett, Elliott, Jonathan David Edwards, Kelly Holmes, Linford Christie, etc?
umm drum

Mo Farah was "produced" in the UK, he lived there from his childhood, he is very definitey not a "plastic Brit", certainly no more than Linford Christie (born in Jamaica).

And coming from a dependency like Turks and Caicos is different to doing a Tiffany Porter, as people from dependencies are all British already. In any case, when someone from Martinique or New Caledonia competes for France it is a complete non-issue, so why are Anguillans or whatever who do the same "plastic"?
another plastic

Why did Martini run for Netherlands Antilles, well that woudl be becuase the netherland Antilles have a National Olympic Committee, which is not surprising as they have always been a autonomous country, rather than a dependency.

Yes the UK has not produced a new Coe, Cram or Ovett, but then again they have never had a better WPV, W100H, MDT, WHT, M5000/10000, than they have now, and Idowu, whilst not as good as Edwards is joint 14th (13th if you take out altitude marks) on the world all time list, and only the US (again removing Altitude) have a second best ever TJ than Idowu.

I love the way Ovett is in the same list as Edwards, condensing decades of performance into the equation. Edwards is closer to the current generation than he is to Ovett.

With regard to Williams, he is British, all T&C citizens are, just as the Falklands, Gibraltar and all other depndencies are British. Yes they have the opportunity to compete for their islands in the World Champs, and Commonwealth Games, just as the Welsh and Scots can compete in the Commonwealths, but for the Olympics the GB team is not just Great Britain, it is a British team including Northern Ireland (not part of Great Britain for those who don't know the difference between the boundaires of Great Britain and the term British) and the other dependent territories.
