Rarely have I seen such butthurt. So what do you think, LR'ers, do you support Pearl Izumi's ad campaign? I think its' a fantastic way to communicate the company's attempt at embracing the heart and soul of running and racing. The people complaining obviously come from the Penguin school of thought and heftier demographics. I find this hugely irritating. How is advertising to the passionate offensive? Did the worst aspects of Gallowaying Runners World readers spill over onto this one page or what?

I mean, it's much better for someone to be active than it is for them to sit on the couch. Being a hobby jogger is awesome.

I just don't understand how you prep for a marathon and do so shitty. There are people on 3 day a week marathon training programs they found on the internet. really?

I'm sure some of those 7 hour people worked really hard to hit those times during the marathon, but giving your all means giving your all in training, not just on race day. Family+kids+job might mean you don't have time to train much. That's fine. But if you aren't at least racing yourself, then don't join a race.

My mom went from hobby jogger to BQ on 9 weeks of training.

Also, that 100 year old dude who ran a 9 hour marathon is a boss.

You just have to think about it as two different events - a marathon race and a marathon event. The race is for people who show up to compete - with the field, with the age group, with themselves. These people care about their time and place. They train accordingly. The marathon event is for people who show up to participate or to raise money for charity.

6 or 7 hour marathons are 3 times the pace of competitive races. If you go out golfing and shoot well over 200 are you still golfing? No, you are probably drinking heavily and just messing around. If you shoot over 200 everyone understands that you are not a golfer. The local course will still take your money, though. And it helps sustain the people who really play.

If you run 7 hours in a marathon everyone should understand that you are not a marathoner. But you should still be welcome to participate.

I like this comment: "Pearl Izumi: we would all like the official definition of a runner. So please let us know. Does 14 marathons in a year qualify? Is it a 4 hour marathon? 3:30? 3? Oh please, great and powerful Oz- share your infinite wisdom..."

I think that running 14 marathons in a year pretty much means that you AREN'T a competitive runner in any sense of the word. If you actually put effort into your races, there's no way you can run a marathon every 3-4 weeks.

From the NY Times article someone linked

“I always ask those people, ‘What was your time?’ If it’s six hours or more, I say, ‘Oh great, that’s fine, but you didn’t really run it,’ ” said Given, who finished the Baltimore race in 4:05:52.

I don't think given really ran it either.

Since when 4:05:52 denotes a fast marathon? this lady thinks she's a real runner but she's a hobby-jogger. Plain and simple.

When I run with my friend Chaz Conrad at the NYC Marathon each year, I tell him, "that's great you raced a 2:33:05 marathon, but you didn't really run sub two hour pace for the first 26 miles of the marathon before collapsing," says Gerry Lingren, who is batshit insane.

All the elites could look at us and say the same thing.

I could probably go run a marathon right now in 3:30...3:00 if I trained for it. I'll call anybody that runs under 4:30 a marathoner...just to be generous.

Wow, impressive.

Thankfully instead of actually running, you choose to share your immense talent with the masses.

Okay I'll not be overly critical over the two threads covering one topic because that is not really the point.

But hawt damn this is what makes running so great isn't it? We get to compete with ourselves, others we are competitive with etc, but feeling that of pushing and hitting a wall is equal for an Olympic runner just the same as a 7hr runner. That feeling of exhaustion and still finding some reason to push makes running worth it. Time is just there to help us understand that changing physiological response. I think p I gets this.

As long as we do that I feel it makes no matter the exact time shown as we finish

I think this is a healthy outlook. I find some of the other comments a bit snobbish and self serving. What difference does it make if you are in the front of the pack and some people are doing a social thing in the back. It is no skin of your nose.

The only complaint I every had as the 1000 foot pee trough that was used in New York when the participating numbers went up over 15,000.

I think the more people invest some time in physical activity the better. Even if it is just a social event for them, being part of a big event in an active role is far better than sitting up in the stands, painted up in some hideous blue and orange and pretending to be a member of some college or pro football team.

It is no more. It has ceased to pee.
