don't know much about Pilates classes but I know yoga works and is probably much cheaper.

Yoga. You can just get a book or CD and get started. You need no equipment either.

A combination is the way to go. Both offer complementary benefits. Avoid gym based pilates as it's more often a joke than not. Find an accredited beginners course in pilates so you are guaranteed to be taught the fundamentals correctly and take them with you into yoga.
