I'm 6'3" and consistently around 170 to 175... I run the steeple. My coach recently told me after opening the season at my PR time (9:59 in a bad race) that I need to lose weight and that I didnt deserve to run the time I did. Thoughts?

Unless you have gained like 20lbs this winter there is no reason any coach should get on any athlete about weight unless anorexia is the issue.

Perhaps for the super elite people it may matter. But for the avg. college runner it does not.

You're saying that weight doesn't matter unless anorexia is the issue? That is just simply wrong. Obviously being 20 pounds overweight will make you slower, no matter what level you're running at. That being said, 175 doesn't mean you are overweight. It all depends on your build, and being slightly underweight will hurt you more than being slightly overweight. But if you are concerned about your weight I would just focus on becoming fitter/leaner rather than saying "I need to drop 20 pounds" and having the numbers be the pure focus...I think Lauren Fleshman (is that her last name or is it Fleischman...I forget) wrote an article about this. But if this is your normal running weight than I wouldn't be overly worried.

lincoln WAS 160, and that 6'3" is perhaps even shallow....he towers me, and i'm 6-2. that said, i ran just fine at 190lbs, and i'm really not running any faster at 175, so take it for what its worth....but i'm happy w/ 3:58, perhaps i could drop a couple of secs w/ 6-8lb reduction, but i can't seem to find the formula to lose the weight.

unless you truly have excess weight to lose, don't sweat it.

cheers, dude~

Yea I mean I'm not over weight. Its mainly in my upper body. I eat well, and dont have like 20lbs of fat as everyone seems to be suggesting... hell i dont know if I have 5 lbs of fat... I've cut down on heavier lifting he had us doing. But honestly I am more concerned with how he approached the subject, and the fact he overlooked me opening the season 25 seconds quicker than last year, in a technically faulty race... Thanks for the responses though! much appreciated!

your coach told you you didn't deserve your time? what, did you cheat? otherwise he is a d bag. also if he's having you do heavy lifting and you don't throw, he's stupid. do some push ups, each your vegies and keep running.

go to the doctor or trainer and have your body fat measured.
body fat of course is more important than weight especially for athletes.

Your coach sounds like an a hole.

I don't think you're fat or big boned.

I am 6'3" raced at 185 (400).

I know how thin 170 is. I guess you're big for a distance guy. Sort of. There are a lot of slow distance runners who weigh that muich, many who weight less.

But it may be who you are. If you want to continue to be successful - 9:59 is not that quick. I'd be targeting a minute faster.

Fist thing to do is stay the heck out of the gym. No upper body stuff.

Run harder, get 10 pounds off. You'll be a better runner. It depends if you want to be a better runner or win the arm wrestling contest at the bar. Your choice.

You shouldn't admit to 9:59. It's nothing of which to be proud. Drop 20-30 pounds and try running an event where success is determined by what you do, not by the events the talented athletes chose to run instead.
