Benefits from one cycle of Lydiard Training phases? 3/28/2012 8:53AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I'm a new-ish runner and have been slowly increasing my mileage for the last year or so. So I just got to the point where I can clear, comfortably, 85 or so miles per week (did this for 4 weeks, up from 65-70mpw, long runs were 18-20 miles) and did a couple weeks at 100mpw with no ill effects. I'm by no means fast, but I believe I could probably crack a 2:50 in a marathon or a 17:30 5k based on my recent half mary race time of 1:21 flat and my mile TT time of 5:06. For reference I'm 6'2", 170lbs and about 11.5-12% body fat (which I plan to bring down to just below 10%).

I want to up my game a bit for my first marathon in November so I was thinking about, starting in a couple weeks after some races in April (5k, 10mile, 1/2 mary), trying the Lydiard system for the summer to prep for the November mary. Counting backward, I could do about 12 weeks of marathon conditioning at 100mpw, then continue the rest of the phases of the system until November.

What kind of benefits will one cycle of this kind of work get me? Honestly, hoping for low 2:40s, but that may be out of reach for me with only 6 months of training.

Hard to say. Why don't you let us know after November? By the way, what's a "mary"?

A 1:21 half-marathon suggests sub-2:50 is possible.

But if it's your first one, it's easy to get it wrong and lose time at the end.

As the other poster said, since it's your first one it's hard to predict exactly what'll happen as variables beyond training drastically influence how the first one goes. If you run the thing smart, i.e., get nice an comfortable in the first half and run steady in the second half (maybe slight negative split the thing or even split it) I don't think you should have much problem going 2:45-2:50 with the steady 85 mpw you're doing. Good luck.

I hope you can break 2:50. I'm hoping to break 2:50 in Boston and have about the same times as you. Based on your times breaking 2:50 will not be an easy task. I honestly think getting in the low 2:40's is nearly impossible in that short of time(no matter what you do in training). Since your mileage is high and you feel comfortable with it you probably have alot of potential in the future...but its going to take a while. Good luck![quote]GetThatPandemic wrote:

I'm a masters runner and ran in the 1:19s for 1/2 and 5:05 for the mile last year. 17:30 is probably right on the money. I haven't run a marathon in a long time, but I'd say 2:50 is about right. 2:40 is probably out of the question. Only way I see you getting there is if you drop 15-20 lbs.

Possible (seriously), 2:45 probably a good pace goal... but saying "Mary" usually implies someone is very new, and/or a sprint triathlete, and even closer to 4 hours (or more).

I did a pretty strict Lydiard cycle one year in college (yes, I did my thrice-weekly hill springing sessions for several weeks) and that took me from 27:00 to 25:30. Now, I wasn't doing 100 in singles, is was more like 80/40 (singles/doubles). And I was doing long tempos and progression runs. But it was about as close to pure lydiard as you can honestly get these days.

Are you kidding me, thats not as close as you can get.
My coach is one of Lydiards boys, Barry Magee.
Last summer he had me on 100-110 in singles plus morning runs. Followed by PURE hill sessions starting with three times a week for the first 3 weeks of springing and then 100% proper 6 times week on the original course around Mt Roskill. Then followed with the traditional speed and conditioning schedule around cornwall park.
That is as pure s you can get. including the 22mile waiatrua course every sunday.
Got to love living in the training grounds of past Olympic greats. Nz is awesome.

And 6 months is perfect, that is a full cycle you should be sweet for your thon

that's cool. Someone posted a link to his site last month. Does he take on new runners?
