Because a well rounded education has been proven to produce better members of society and thus better employees. The bad news is people with a better education are less likely to become ignorant bigoted drains on society, i.e. conservatives. So your kind will dry up if the education system is fixed. |

Excellent point, only, it's NOT bad news. If we could prevent the ultra conservatives from being involved with the political system we would be much better off. Get rid of about 20% of the ignorant right, right, wingers and then the moderate conservatives (capable of actually thinking) would be ionfluenced the idiots. You, know, the people who think Obamcare will euthanize senior citizens or that churches will pay for health care, or that Republicans are anti-abortion or democrats are anti gun. |

Remind me again why public education dollars are spent on Track and Field? |

So we all have a good choice of movies to watch and music to listen too in our spare time. If you enjoy these things you would want them publicly funded. Same as sports. We would not be so well off if we were not diversified as people. Cars would be bland looking and just basic transportation. Who knows what our clothes would look like if we didn't allow children to creatively develop. No TV. No radio. Because there wouldn't be much to broadcast. Forget any cool apps that you get on your computer devices. Public dollars are spent to educate students in art and music because there is value in it. |

I mean, higher education is more common in republicans than in democrats. Calling "conservatives" idiots or bigoted is an example of a wild generalization yourself. Don't lump the vast majority of rational middle of the road conservatives in with the fringe ultra right and we won't lump in all the democrats with radical communists. And back on the point, I think that having a well rounded education allows you to think critically and analyze multiple things from multiple viewpoints, which is always valuable. |

Point well taken. Funding should also be cut for athletics. All of this funding should be dumped into educating students in the STEM disciplines. Perhaps private local/regional organizations could fund development of dance and music teams if they saw a benefit from it (unlikely, however). |

Ever notice how schools that spend a decent amount of money on arts, athletics, and other "extras" outside of the core curriculum are always much better schools than those that squeeze every penny and provide nothing beyond the state mandated courses? If a high school kid tells me that he's currently taking a course in photography or architectural design or something like that, I can pretty much assume that he goes to a school where almost everyone graduates and the majority of students go on to college with a decent chunk going to Ivies or other top tier schools. If a kid tells me that his school doesn't have any art classes, I can pretty much assume that he's from poorly performing school. |

That's like saying "ever notice how a kid from a two parent household making over $200,000 per year tend to out perform kids from the ghetto?" Places flush with cash CAN do the extras. Other schools aren't providing that stuff because they're lazy or greedy, it's because they dont have the money. In other news people with more money have better cars, houses, and take better vacations than those without much money. |

Why should we pay for education in the STEM disciplines? You engineers are always talking about how easy it is to find a job and how much money you make with your degrees - that being the case, it seems to me like you should pay for your own education. Plus, it's probably more likely that you can obtain corporate funding for research. |

For whatever reason, people who value arts have kids who go on to be successful while people who don't value arts are less likely to produce successful kids. You make a good point that people who value arts are more likely to be wealthy themselves. |

I also would like to know why there should be public funding for STEM. Remind why we should do this. |

so we dont become mindless robots. oh wait, we (the adult population) already are. why? because we stop doing that stuff after our schooling is done. we lose all creativity and ability to think for ourselves. |

You could still answer the question. Why should there be public funding of anything? Why should there even be a public sector? |
| not a bando |

In my school district, they force 5th graders to play in the band so they have a good pipeline for the high school band. It's one of the better ones in the state. So, basically it's taking away school time so the district can excel at what should be an extracurricular activity. |
