Flanagan wins Lisbon. Lock for Olympic gold? 3/25/2012 6:08AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Seriously, the way she ran down the best the Ethiopians and Kenyans could muster, you got to figure Flanagan is the favorite going into the London Olympics. She hurt the Ethiopian so bad she dropped out. They're running scared now. America #1!

lilya shobukhova is still the favorite for the marathon if healthy this year. also, as we all know, there's a big difference between the full and half. flanagan can do it though. she's got the eye of the tiger for sure.

Mary Keitany is the favorite, despite the tactical error she made in NYC

Shobukhova is THE favorite,
Keitany is A favorite,
and Flanagan is a surprise major contender
Paula's like Haile: over the hill

Really cool for US running and Shalane, Schumacher and Co.

Sweet intercontinental quartet of rivals too

Marathon and 10,000 m double gold for Flanagan.
0.5/10 for yourself.

I see Shobu and Mary at the same level. This could be interesting. I said it before, I say it again - I can see a sub 2:20 M for the women in the Olympics.

To me, the only potential surprise contendor is Paula. She will either be ready to rock or DNF.

I don't believe the schedule makes a marathon/10,000 double feasible for the women. It is for the men, actually

Flanagan's 5k/10k credentials suggest that she could run under 2:20 like Kastor if optimally trained for marathon, but right now she does not have that ability and there are multiple sub 2:20 runners possible for the olympics. A medal would not surprise me if all goes well but I would not expect it unless she ran 30:10 or 65 high in the next few months.

Agreed. Wanjiru is one of the few that comes to my mind.

I remember Martin Lel having been the favorite going into the 2008 olympic marathon, not wanjiru.

Lel had malaria leading up to the games, everyone knew that.

I think she'll probably be the 3rd best runner going in to London. Anyone that thinks Shobukhova will beat Keitany is smoking crack. As long as Keitany doesn't go out too fast, she can't lose. If Shobukhova tries to stick with Keitany, Shalane ought to have a good shot at picking her off for a silver.

Yeah, Lel was definitely not "the favorite".
