My knees have been giving me problems lately. Mostly those minor aches and pains when the feet strike the ground. Not so much that it really effects my running but I find that sometimes it takes me longer to recover and some days I have to take it easy. It seems alot of runners use bicycling as a cross training tool. Aqua jogging is an option as well but I prefer to be outdoors. So before I invest in a bike, just like to get some thoughts on the subject. What type of bike (road or mtb), do you prefer easy rides on bike paths or do you hammer through roads? |

Biking helps a lot. I have IT band issues and weak hips I bike about 40-60 miles a week right now. Biking a big gear on my cheap road bike helps a lot. I bike 3-4 miles to my trails then run and bike back. Don't bother getting a fancy race bike. They go through tubes and tires for fun. Get a cheap bike at a pawn store, put some new components and tires on it and it will run great. Another benefit is you can find new places to run. The only drawback is it kinda makes your legs get huge. But in my experience it can strengthen your joints. |

Cycling is usually great for cross training. But if your knee problem is ITBS, that is also a common cycling injury, so you'll need to make sure you have a clear diagnosis. Meet with a good physical therapist who is also an athlete. They can help you get through a lot of these types of nagging injuries. |

I don't think I have ITBS. The pain happens when I make contact with the ground not really from movement or flexing. Can you get an aerobic workout from casual riding on trails? I would think to get an equivalent workout as running, you'd have to get moving on the roads. |
