Why is it so hard in this day and age to cancel a print job? 3/18/2012 1:14PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
You'd think with the vast multitude of sophisticated technology out there we'd be at the point of being able to simply cancel a print job. But no, this still seems to be an impossibility.

So true. Printers and especially printer-computer communication seem to be perpetually stuck in the mid 90s.

It's called buffering. Printers are slow. PC's and networks are fast. They can shove the entire document to the printer in a flash and there it is stored in the local memory buffer. So it is best just to go to the printer and try to stop it there since it is where the bits are.

you said it doc. computers were invented sixty years ago or so and yet you still to this day cannot turn on a switch and, like a light, have your computer on and working. even my old mac classic with maybe 256k or 512k? from 1990 was fast enough and archaic enough to allow me to start writing within fifteen to thirty seconds but my 2007 pc clone with 110 GB takes a few minutes, naturally, to do the same.

1) does this really come up often for you? I can count on one hand the number of times that I've hit print and then changed my mind.

2) Why does it even matter? So you print an extra page or two before you get the job stopped. That's, what, a nickel out of your pocket?

I agree. You hit print, but decide that you do not want the entire document, but just a small paragraph, or you want to print handouts from PowerPoint, but hit slides instead. You try to delete it and do it over, and it takes 5 minutes before it registers in the printer. That is 5 wasted minutes. It gets old.

That happens to me every second time I try to print. Mostly because I hit print and realize I've forgotten to double space, or include word count or something equally obvious. Yes, I'm a student. I waste so much time not being able to cancel print jobs. Either printers need to be sorted out or I need to get better organised...

No No No. The problem is that when you hit print. It doesn't print. It sits there for 15 minutes doing nothing at all. You check the printer, everything is good to go. Still nothing prints. So you hit print again. Nothing happens, so you check the jobs in the printer que and there are 2 of the same thing. You cancel one of them and think to yourself, "cool, only one will print" Then it prints two anyway, or better yet, it gets confused and gives you an error message. So you shut everything down, restart it, hit print once and it prints 50 copies for no logical *#&$T^*@&# reason.

IMHO the worst job in IT is being the printer administrator.

My printer is always f'ing things up, too. To clear out the queue, I usually end up shutting it off and then restarting it.

YOU'VE NO IDEA OF MY STRUGGLES.

NO IDEA.

First day of job as summer student. FIRST DAY!!! Boss asks to print a sample of a document drawn up by last year's summer student. MISTAKE: assumed one page template. ACTUAL: ~250 pages of same template. DISASTER IMMINENT MOFOS.

>PRESS PRINT DOCUMENT.
>GO OVER TO OTHER ROOM DOWN THE HALL TO GET IT FROM PRINTER
>NOTHING THERE
>OK
>GOES BACK, HITS PRINT AGAIN
>GETS DISTRACTED BY CUSTOMER
>COWORKER GOES TO GET PRINT JOB
>DAFUQ
>DISASTER
>BOSS THINKS I'M AN IDIOT

WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SO BAD IF IT WERE AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. THAT PRINTER WAS FROM SATAN. BOSS THOUGHT I WAS AN IDIOT UNTIL LAST WEEK OF WORK WHEN IT HAPPENED TO HER.

>STILL HATE PRINTERS.
