Just lost my last coach to death. Thought about it for a time and think that I might better go with a web coach...? Can anyone point me in the right direction toward 2-4 coaches that have the the ratings and personal experience. The trouble is, seems that everyone considers themselves an exphys-guru with all of the answers. I have no idea how to sort out the good from the bad. Thanks in advance! |

You must the ones that go into a running store to check shoe size/fit and then go to Internet to buy them on sale! I charge my clients here in Hollywood $150 an hour and they think it's cheap! They keep lavishing me with gifts on any pretense. I already got 4 gifts this week for St. Patricks Day. Expect triple that for Easter. |

I'd look for a retired experienced runner, who might already be coaching others and would be happy for you to join them. Check out running groups in the area. You could very well find people to train with, and get pointers from them. |

In complete agreement. Either one of these gentlemen would be worth of the investment. The time that both of them spend just in response to an athlete's questions is worth the money, and that is not even counting their ability to effectively program and adapt the training to the individual. The time they make themselves available to assist in these avenues is immense. Renato Canova has stated on this forum that his athletes' planned training schedules typically get altered by as much as 50% by the time they are actually executed during a training cycle, and these are the elite who are born to run and whose sole profession is running, recovery, and with much less distraction in many, many cases. If you are serious about training, why would you not get some experienced, sound coaching advice? Do you have anyone helping you to plan and adjust for continued improvement. The cost vs benefits easily puts this in the athletes favor. Just getting to know these two personally has been more than worth it. |

Could be the shelling out of $1800 a year. Where I live, that'd pay for 600+ 10ks and halfs, and over 1000+ 5ks year. Being fast is pointless if you're too broke to race. Obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but $150 a month for internet coaching just seems really, really pricey. |

I've just been of the opinion that if you are going to really go after a goal, get the help of someone who has been successful in guiding others there. In the form of a coach it is literally someone who has likely learned and seen many different roadmaps to success. I go in phases myself and don't get coaching on a regular basis admittedly. But the irony is that many times when I am honed in on a goal and the end result, having someone else guide the training makes the actual process more enjoyable. On a similar note, to me it is like a person trying to justify the cost of a good GPS watch. If you are not lucky to have to have mile markers or marked routes or to have a coach in a shadowing vehicle to help pace you, why not spend the money on a GPS. In the long run, say $300 for a Garmin, is an investment with a very high cost to benefit ratio. If it lasts even just 5 years, that is $5/month. If a person wants to really nail their goals, not sure why they'd want to leave any stone unturned. Perhaps that's just me though. Not saying that a person has to be coached 24/7 and 365, but it's worth a try and doubtful you'll end up in worst shape. |

Look at how much you pay to race. 10k's at $20 - $35 Half Marathons are $30 - $75 Marthons are running $50 - $120 are more. You wont play 5 cent for a good coach. This is why the usa is slow a** hell. I'm talking about the 5k and up runners in the usa. |
