How fast could Usain Bolt run the 40? I'm talking like how the football players do it where you start with no blocks but the timer doesn't start until you start running. |

4.20 Keep in mind the shorter the distance the less time to seperate the level/degree of speed. Most the fast footballers were college sprinters who excelled in shorter distances. |

I'm guessing he could do it in under 10 minutes. He's a pretty seasoned drinker. |

Interpolating from 10m split times Bolt hit 40 yards at about 4.35-4.37 during his first gold medal run. His reaction time is 0.165, which would be about what Avante said. I don't really know how football 40s are timed though, or what type of surfaces they're running on. |

merrit says he ran 4:18, and Bolt is faster. |

Here are the actual times for his 9.58: http://www.sportsscientists.com/2009/08/analysis-of-bolts-958-wr.html Note the WR for 60m Those footballer 40m times are BS |

No. They're just a different measures. The watches start on the "1st movement" of the player, not on the crack of a starter's pistol. So hack .2 off Bolt's 40yd split.... |

Yes, it's first movement, so subtract the reaction time. And it's 40yds, not 40m. |

Doing some approximate math you get Bolt ran about 8.9 m/s for 40m using a 40m time of about 4.49 (4.64-rxn time). Covert to yd/s and you get about 9.74. Divide 40yds by that speed and you get about 4.11s. The problem is he that he was accelerating up to 80 meters, so he was slightly slower at 40yds than 40m, but it's good enough. |
