So my friend is a 400/800 meter workout and he told me this workout he did yesterday during 25mile per hour wind. He has prs of 53second in the 400 and 2:04 in the 800. The workout he told me was 12x400 with a minute and thirty second rest in between The 400s were paced like this first 100meters is 13seconds second 100meters is 16seconds third 100meters is 22seconds and last 100meters is 13seconds, which comes out to 64seconds per 400 total. I dont even think he is capable of doing 12 reps of 64second 400s evenly paced with a minute and 30second rest inbetween let alone broken up in 25mile per hour wind but he insists he completed it! I wanted to hear letsruns thoughts as to whether or not this workout is possible for a 2:04 800meter runner. |

What is the logic behind his workout? Why include a 22 sec "rest" 100 within the 400 if you are taking 90 seconds rest after the 400? |

Why do you care? I mean that in a serious, not snotty way. Will it affect you or your training? |

13.99, 16.99, 22.99, 13.99 = 67.96 Seems reasonable enough. |

On a track, the 25mph wind will half the time be behind him (helping him greatly). Think Ryan Hall running 2:03 or whatever last year. So sure it's possible especially if he can run 100m in less than 12 seconds. |

Well I actually already chose the high range for his times, he actually put that he did 12-13seconds for his first and fourth 100meter. |

Haha yeah that would help him greatly for the first 100meter but for the last 100meter it would make it hell just like when ryan hall said the wind slowed him down a lot for the olympic trials |

I've run 47.5 before and did a workout like this 4 days before with my coach timing me: 1st 400 in 12.9, 12.5, 20, 12.5 = 58 2nd 400 in 12.7, 12.5, 18, 12.4 = 56 3rd 400 in 12.5, 12.5, 17, 12.0 = 54.5 It was harder than it looks. 2 min rest between sets 1-2, 1:30 rest between the last set. Finished with 5 x 200 in 30 sec pace. |

Yeah, but remember he was wind aided the whole time. The wind takes more than it gives. |
| Shouldn't make a difference |

The wind giveth, the wind taketh away. Also, if you let wind heavily influence a workout you're a vag. |

Fact or opinion? And you'd need to know which 100m segments the wind was acting with/against The workout doesn't sound too unbelievable if your friend can run a 11.xx 100m. Also, do his times match up to the guy who did a similar workout above? |

When I was in highschool, I would have easily handled 12X400m in 64 seconds and my PRs were slightly slower (55 for 400m and 2:05 for 800m). I would definitely remember doing repeats in 65seconds per quarter and then easily dropping it down to sub 60 for the last few. The thing is, I was better at 400meter repeats than I was at actual racing and I wasn't even trying to be a workout hero. Your friend might be full of crap, but that's not impossible. |

The 400s werent evenly paced 64seconds though that is what makes it harder, and in 25mile per hour wind with the first 100meter with wind and last 100meter against the wind. And if you could do 12 x 400 64second 400 repeats with sub 60second last few with a minute and 30second rest in between it sounds like even if you were running really fast in practice your race times should be faster than that. |
| what kind of track you guys on |

Some of these responses make me wonder if they have ever run on a track. If the 1st 100 was wind-aided, the last 100 would not be "hell". That would likely be the 3rd 100 (since it is opposite the 1st). Likewise the 2nd & 4th would be opposites. It is very possible that the wind was partially aiding both the 1st & last 100s, and partially hindering the 2nd & 3rd. Picture a track with straightaways running north/south. Wind out of the northeast. |
