i came across this result yesterday as ive been following this kid for a couple years, he races my son frequently. he has gradually progressed over the past couple years but 4:42 in february when he's supposed to be peaking for our florida state meet (first week in may) is incredible. as a man of the sport for over 25 years i have rarely seen such a talent.. he also ran 10:10 in the 3200 on friday which i was there for and i can honestly say he looked as if he were jogging...4:30 by the end of the year? http://fl.milesplit.com/meets/106556/results/188253 |

I don't follow middle school times closely enough to really know what an elite time for that age is but is it really good enough to create a thread about it? Rarely seen such a talent in your 25 years of following the sport? Not trying to be a dick, I really am curious. |

Eric Costen has run 4:40 this year on a horrible 2 lane track and he is in 7th grade. |

He sounds hot. Pics? |

How old is he - 13 or 14? Makes all the difference in the world. Lot of 8th graders are 14, so it's not quite as impressive as a 13yo. |

Troy Schultz from Troy Ohio who was 2 time national champ in the mile a few years ago ran 4:30ish in JH, ran a 17:15 in a 5k in the summer before 7th grade. He was physically immature when he did it. |

I know a kid who's 11 and ran 3:58 for 1500 and 1:59 for 800. |

As others have mentioned, there have been 8th graders running 4:20's/4:30's before (just last year even there were at least two in the mid 4:20's). 4:40ish isn't too uncommon. Still, a 4:40ish kid as an 8th grader could turn in to something by the time he's done. Just have to wait and see... |

Physically immature huh? Where is he now, then? |
| say what ? ? ? |

Not sure what physically immature is supposed to mean. How would that be a predictor of future running abilities? |

I'm impressed. Went to JH with a kid that ran 4:47 back in the day at the end of the season. He went on to the state meet in CA multiple times in high school, but never placed very well (might have run about 4:0x high in HS) |

Back in the dark ages when I was in school there was a kid in our league who ran 4:40 in 8th grade. He went on to become a 2x state XC champ, 2x 3200m state champ, I think 1x 1600m state champ. He went on to run on a college scholarship and be a good, productive college runner. So, I'd say it is a really, really good time at that age indicative of some talent. It is probably not a nationally prominenet time and I'm sure there have been quite a few kids who ran that time and never went on to do much. |

Physically immature huh? Where is he now, then?[/quote] By that I mean he hadnt matured physically. You get some of these JH kids that have already hit puberty running 4:40's.......they are more mature then some sophomores in HS so their time isnt relative to their age but where they are in the maturation process. |
