Does Rupp have any realistic chance of beating Lagat this weekend? 2/21/2012 2:45PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I just can't picture any other scenario than Lagat sprinting away on the last lap....

Rupp needs to try running from the front. He tail lags. Lagat knows how to control a race and when to take off. Rupp is a follower, not an initiator. Lagat has the advantage and has proven it many, many times.

Only reason Rupp runs 1500 is to avoid Lagat. Is he planning Worlds? No-one in their right mind sends Rupp to Istanbul to run 1500

first of all, do we know if rupp is doing the mile or the 3000m or both?

i think we may actually be surprised by rupp's finishing speed. he may be able to outkick lagat, regardless of pace. rupp's speed gets better each year. lagat's getting old and rupp is entering his prime, so at some point, rupp will become faster than lagat. it's just a matter of how well he times it.

Yes, Rupp has a chance, but no, he won't.

Excellent, succint answer.

Lagat always outkicks Rupp, except the first time when he doesn't. I don't think it happens this time. Mainly because of the distance. 3000M seems to be right in Lagat's wheel house of his best distance is.

I think he has a chance because his recent 8:09 AR is slightly better than Lagat's 13:07 record. Regardless, it should be a good last 1-2 laps - I'm not even sure whom to root for anymore.

That my friend is so completely meaningless. It is very likely Lagat runs a lot faster than 13:07 if he needed to (maybe wins in that 12:58 German race); your comment implies 13:07 was 'where he is at'. Highly unlikely. We'll see if Rupp has the courage to run with him this weekend

News flash: Galen Rupp ran completely alone in his 8:09. Methinks he could have gone a little faster with someone pushing him.

Exactly, same argument applies for both and I would say Rupp could have run faster in a race like Farah got in. Lagat had guys breating down his freaking neck, I don't think he has another 9 freaking seconds in him, give me a break.

"Has the courage..."?!? WTF are you talking about. Rupp is a gamer. He may not be able to kick with Lagat. He also may not be able to kick fast enough to medal at Worlds/Olympics. But it won't be for lack of heart. Have you been paying attention at all?

Yeah, and when will that be exactly? When Lagat is 43 and has moved up to the 10k and the races goes thru 5k in 13:15, and Lagat dies the last lap when Rupp passes him?

(to me, "outkicking" someone really doesn't just mean: passing them at the end of the race, as in my above example. Even In a 5k that goes out at 4:04 mile pace and runs at a solid pace the whole way, yes, it is conceivable that someday soon Rupp could pass Lagat on the last lap if Lagat dies. But this will be due to Rupp's superior strength. I only count it as truly outkicking someone if the race is somewhat tactical, and the last lap is significantly (not just slightly) faster than the rest of the race. Under THAT scenario ( a typical championship race scenario), Rupp does not outkick a healthy, in-shape Lagat. It just doesn't happen)

Listen up fools......the first three in the Duesseldorf 5000 have the following record against Lagat. yes I think he would have been at least nine freaking seconds faster if he needed to be. It's obvious you naive fools.

Longosiwa........4-0 to Lagat
Paul Koech.......3-0 to Lagat
Isiah Koech......4-0 to Lagat

Lagat looked hard-pressed at Millrose and was soundly beaten in Birmingham. Rupp looks stronger than ever. The crossroads is nigh.

And Rupp looked gassed out after his A.R in the 2mile. He had to work really hard to take down bernies 2mile A.R. Lagat looked fresh as ever after breaking Galens 5k indoor A.R.

You bet Rupp was tired. He ran alone for almost the last mile.

And watch the video of Lagat's 5k. He looks pretty exhausted after finishing.
