Should I quit running? 2/20/2012 6:26PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I swear I am not a troll. I'm going to be honest; I enjoy running. But I recently ran a half marathon, and I am too embarassed to say what my time was, but I will say that my average pace per mile was 7:29. I don't know what happened, but mentally, I just had trouble pusing myself so I couldn't speed up at all in the middle of the race and I felt dead the last four miles. And when I crossed the line, I still felt like I had left a ton out on the course, and I was beaten by a bunch of old people. I work full time but don't make a lot of money. Hence, I am exhausted at the end of every day. Plus race fees, gear, shoes, etc. becomes quite pricey. I see the workouts people do on this site and the times they run, as well as the disdain for "hobby joggers". It's hard for me I guess because I am not a natural athlete. And my parents keep asking when are you going to stop running and get a girlfriend, married, etc. And then I run these slow times and have nothing to show for it. I just get discouraged. What should I do? It causes me so much grief. Should I just quit?

If you enjoy it then don't quit. It doesn't really matter if you aren't good. As far as the money . . . you should be able to make it on two pairs of shoes per year unless you run a pretty fair amount, and you don't have to run races.

So you ran about a 1:44:22? I think you pretty much gave the time away.
But you said it yourself, "[you] enjoy running," if you enjoy it, don't stop. If you don't enjoy it enough that it outweighs the negative aspects, stop. But you can keep running without spending too much time everyday or spending money on races.
oh please

Step 1: Leave the LetsRun forums and all other running forums.
Step 2: You will cease to be self conscious about your times.
Step 3: You can get back to enjoying running.

I think being on LetsRun is a big part of your problem. My happiness increases tenfold when I take a break from it.

Every time i get really sick of running, i go on my run with no purpose. By no purpose i mean i have no defined route, pace or distance. No watch either. Just run wherever and whatever pace my legs want to go. Just make sure to tuck a $20 in your sock just in case you get lost and have to take a cab to get home.

someone sucks at math.

7 * 60 = 420 + 29 seconds = 449 seconds x 13.1 = 1:38:01

To the OP. 1:38 isn't that bad, with a year or so of good running you could dip into the 1:20s, and before you know it you are a sub 3 marathoner. That's a heck of a lot better than 90% of the population.

Why do you run? I like the way it makes my body feel and the way I feel as I walk around all day, every day. I hardly ever race. I simply don't like the anxiety of putting myself out there and putting all these expectations on performance when in reality, I just plain like to run. So, I don't race. And people ask me all the time if I am racing XXX or YYY but I just say 'no.'
I think a lot when I run, I plan my day, I set my goals, and have lots of good conversations. I don't want to give that up. If I were you, I wouldn't give it up either.
And I'll agree with eliminating this site from your daily reading list. Take the advice here (mine included) with a grain of salt....

Definitely don't quit if you enjoy it.

I'm a 19:03 5ker, and I'm a 22-year-old guy. I plan to keep running until I'm not physically capable of it, which I hope is when I die.
There with you on speed

Don't worry about what people post here. There is a culture of exaggeration among many posters. Also, genes matter. Do what you can with what you have.

Learning to run while holding a full-time job KILLED me. It gets easier. I promise. Start with a reasonable goal of running 3 times a week for 30 minutes (no worrying about pace), or some other goal you know you can meet. Build from there.

I barely ran at all the last few years, struggling with motivation, time and other things. Now I'm running 4 times a week, getting my long runs back up there, and taking a shot at breaking 1:30 in the half next fall.

Trust me. Stick with it. The key is to realize you are an individual and you cannot judge yourself by the (often exaggerated) standards of the letsrun community.

I go to LR for entertainment--and some threads on training for Old People like me. Otherwise, I don't take it too seriously. I'm not fast, but in my early 60s so it's not like I feel obliged to run 5something pace--I shoot goals that are realistic for me.

Main thing is, as others said, if you enjoy it keep at it. Your body is thanking you for the cardio and other benefits. That becomes more and more valuable as you get older and others your age sit in rocking chairs, wheeze when they walk, and tell you you'll wreck your knees with all that running--while you look 20 years younger than they do.
