I just noticed I haven't seen any provisional standards for D1 indoor track this year. Did NCAA drop the provisional standards this year? If so, how does qualification work this year? Top 16 auto qualifiers get to go to the dance? And if they don't have 16 autos, will they go to performances that are just outside of it until they hit 16 participants? the only documentation I could find related to this would have required me to sign up for the NCAA portal website... can anyone verify any of this procedure for me? Thanks, |

Each Field will have 14 athletes and the relays will each have 10 teams. If there are more than 14/10 Autos, they all get in. Then they fill the fields until they reach a total number of 255 men and 255 women in the meet. So - if there are enough spots to put 15 athletes in each event, they will. Then if there are enough to put 16, they will. If not, then the committee picks which events to add the last people into. The hard number is 255 athletes - that is what the NCAA will pay for - so once you get to 255, the fields are set. |

Last year for the men, all individual events had 16 except for the PV (17), 60 (18), 60H (18) and 3000 (20). The DMR had 12 teams and the 4x400 had 11. The key is how many doublers there are and if any events have an insane amount of autos, like the 3000 last year and the DMR two or three years ago. I'm pretty sure the 60 and 60H got bumped to 18 because of ties for the last spot. This year in the 60, there are four guys tied for 12th at 6.67 and then four guys tied for 16th at 6.68. If that doesn't change (although we know it will), they would have to decide whether to stay at 15 or go to 19. |

As your final remark implies, they take all those with the same mark, which affects the HJ and PV the most, since those go in (cm) integers, while in the 60s the marks are all within about 0.20 seconds and so the granularity of marks leads to ties. There are certain events where dual entry affects the numbers (SP/Wt; 800/mile, mile/3000, 3000/5000, LJ/TJ). Here the 3000 is the odd event. It is odd event. In general distances are twice the prior distance. However, for indoors, the mile/3000 ratio is 1.86 and the 5000/3000 is 1.67. Thus, it is easier to cover the gap up from the mile and down from the 5000. Also, these is overlap with the DMR (although I am not certain how that affects the numbers). |
