The guy has been stringing together wins for a few years and just took the USA XC title. Put that up with his 8k title and his BUPA run and he is the feel good story of 2011-2012. He has no shoe contract and, as far as I know, has no coach. I doubt most people even know his name or would recognize him on the street. Oh and people will discredit his wins by saying the fields were weak but you can only race your competition. |

Bobby Mack was actually a very good runner in HS, got second in footlocker his senior year. Reason people don't know him is because he has underachieved from 2003-2010. No one knew how good Lin was before last week, but people who have known about running for more than a few years know that Mack was a huge talent but didn't live up to it for a while. Glad to see he is now. |

Bobby Mack made Footlocker his senior year but I don't think he was second. Lin was California Basketball Player of the year his senior year. That is probably way more prestigious than going to Footlocker. Lin alo had some pretty sick games in College. |

That's correct. Second that year was Mack's soon-to-be N.C. State teammate Wes Smith. Mack had a lot of injury problems in college; I think he missed 3 whole years. Glad to see him running well and improving. |

Maybe if Bobby Mac was Asian-American, went to an Ivy League school, and was actually beating some big names. Then he would be something like Jeremy Lin. |

If Jeremy Lin is able to extend his success beyond the next couple of weeks, perhaps he'll become the Bobby Mack of basketball. |

Jeremy Lin is the Jeremy Lin of Tim Tebowing |

Even saying this, you show how deluded runners are about the impact of our sport. "Most people" would not recognize multiple AR-breaker GALEN RUPP on the street. (Shown a picture, they might mistake him for Macaulay Culkin, but that's not recognition.) |

Bobby Mackey's Music World is quite haunted. |

Rupp is more likely to be mistaken for Kenneth from 30 rock. Compare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Kenneth_Parcell.jpg http://www.letsrun.com/photos/2012/usatfclassic/imagepages/image30.php Although I bet his recognition around Eugene and Portland is pretty high. |

no, no its about equal. CA basketball player of the year is equivalent to state champ in xc. |

I think he was 9th at Foot Locker and it was a real breakout race for him. He did well his freshman year at State but I think had mutliple injuries the last 3 years of college. no, no its about equal. CA basketball player of the year is equivalent to state champ in xc.[/quote] |

How about some cred for Coach Geiger - he coaches Bobby and had 4 guys under 8:10 (and Hill's CR) also, he had 3 stress fractures in college, so that's probably why he didn't do much until late and post-collegiately |

Man, Mack and Geiger are both huge studs. Good on 'em both. I was a Tar Heel, too. Still, I have always had more respect for NCSU than any other team in the ACC, possibly the NCAA. Those guys work their butts off and most of them come in with a shortage of talent. |

Are you serious? NC State was like a graveyard for Footlocker finalists around that time. They got like five Footlocker guys every year and they all got hurt or disappeared. I'm sure they work hard, and I would *think* you would know way more about their program than I do, but I remember a ton of big names going there and doing nothing. Thus, the truth is, in my mind, the exact opposite of what you said. |

Hill - 7:43 Moldovan - 8:02 Sonnenfeldt - 8:08 Campbell - 8:10 Himelright - 8:11 plus Henken and Colley were 13:57 and 13:45 last year. None of these guys were sub 9 in HS and only Hill, Colley, and Sonnenfeldt were sub 9:10. They're doing a great job. |

Okay, I'm a State fan myself, but 4 of the 5 guys you listed were 3000 times for were Footlocker finalists. |
