Apple now worth more than Sweden 2/9/2012 4:26PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Apple now has a market cap that is greater than the GDP of Sweden. It's hard to fathom. Apple's market cap is greater than Microsoft's and Google's, combined.

That doesn't mean it's worth more than Sweden. Sweden's GDP is how much the country produces in a year. So Sweden produces the equivalent of one Apple every year, sort of.

Is it true that Apple has like ~$100 billion in CASH?

How on Earth can they not afford to raise living conditions of their supply chain in China?/??

that's the inflated value not the cash value. the u.s. nation for instance is worth 1/4 of it's inflated value.

They can afford to, they just choose not to. They won't make any changes until consumers decide saving $5 on an iPod isn't worth dozens of people needlessly dying.

This is basically right.

From the NY Times story:

“You can either manufacture in comfortable, worker-friendly factories, or you can reinvent the product every year, and make it better and faster and cheaper, which requires factories that seem harsh by American standards,” said a current Apple executive.

“And right now, customers care more about a new iPhone than working conditions in China.”

That's because you are wrong. Saving those $5 means that dozens of people in China get to live but that one person in the developed world has $10 less off of a comfortable salary. It sucks for us but you have it all backward.

Apple is evil. Anyone who invests in Apple supports the evil. Apple takes millions of slaves in China and pays them nothing. Many of the end up killing themselves.

The products Apple sells make people lazy and spoiled. This is bad for the world on both ends. Basically Apple exists to spread evil and misfortune on both sides of the equation.

Apple is the mark of the beast. Do not take the mark of the beast or you will go to hell.

I'm wondering what a 6'2" Swedish woman is valued on Sweden's balance sheet.

Apple is the biggest bubble in the history of the world, hiding behind valuations and sales that are based on slave labor in China and cheap credit in the U.S.

These conditions can not continue and long term holders in Apple will find their investment taking heavy hits in the future once the slave labor pools start shrinking and the credit dries up.

Apple is a casino, not an investment. Lots of people make money from Casino's but they don't make a living from it. There is a difference.

You're better off in Exxon or Starbucks.

Admittedly my main experience in viewing Swedish women is watching clips of Big Brother Sweden, Bjorn Borg's former girlfriend, and Swedish women in the Winter Olympics.

I'm not talking about wages, which are reasonable for China. Read the article. Actually, just read my post dude, seriously. You're responding to something I didn't say.

There have been a large number of deaths in factories used by Apple due to lax safety standards. When the same exact problem (aluminum dust) causes major explosions twice in your factories, something isn't right.

It's not solely an Apple problem, but it's easily within their power to change.

Pretty much all the tech companies have horrendous Chinese supply chains. Apple gets the most flack because they make oodles of profits while the rest fight for scraps.

It's up to the government to create rules about working conditions. If China wants to raise the standards, they are free to do so.

I don't even know what this means. It's just a fact that a country can make rules about working standards. Are you under the impression that working conditions in the US are good just because companies here are benevolent? No, the US government has rules and fines companies for breaking those rules. China is free to do the same.

It's also a fact that Apple et al can avoid doing business with abusive companies.

Is it alright to source coffee and cocoa from farmers using child slaves in the Ivory Coast? After all, if it's not illegal it must be A-OK.
