Today Chuck Engle, the best USA marathon runner by all standards except Dane's, destroyed a very competitive Maui Oceanfront Marathon. Two more wins to tie the World Record for career wins. Probably have it by the end of January. |

Good for Chuck. I hope he gets his wins. Match etc... please leave the one who shall not be named out of this thread. |

144 to tie the Norwegian. 3:30 on a trail marathon in Cali. Might be his slowest win ever. Thoughts? http://www.arrs.net/TR_MaWin.htm |

Yeah. My thought is that record is silly. |

Because you have won sooooo many, right? Wendell Gee = fat, jealous and slow. There's my thought. |
| Best Marathon runner ever??? |

Most prolific winner sure but they just had a little race to see who the best marathon runner in the US is. I didn't see the Chuckster there. |

I won't speak for Wendell but for me. I have won one marathon and it was a training run where I ran 2:52. I could find easy races to cherry pick every freaking weekend if I wanted but I don't. When I actually RACE I run at places like Chicago and Boston. I'm not winning those but I have run a PR over 10 minutes faster than ol Chuckster. |

How many of those wins was he drug tested after? |

none, however the man does have an impressive upper body. Charles Atlas. |

So why the drug accusations? Does "chuckster" exude characteristics of drugs? If a runner were on drugs why would they run as slow as he does? I guess when he breaks 2:12 I will be more suspicious. But at 41 I think the guy is a beast. And to the "2:21" marathon runner....sucks to just miss the OT's |

So a 2:52 and you won? Sounds like "cherry-picking" to me especially for a '2:21 I'm to slow to make the trials' runner. And you choose not to race every weekend. Chuckster does. And I believe he has done Boston, Chicago, New York, London, Berlin. It has been stated many times that not everyone likes big city marathons. Do your own thing let Wendell and Engle do theirs otherwise you sound like a little jealous bitch. |

I wanted to get a solid long run in, figured a race would be nice because they would take care of water and what not and it was cheap and close to where I lived. If I had been beaten by 20 minutes I would not have given two $hits because I had a different goal in mind for the day. Engle can do his own thing, just don't act like this is an impressive accomplishment because it is not at all. I'm not saying that out of jealousy, I am saying that as a rational human being who happens to run competetively. |

Because if you know what you're doing 'roids are much more effective for the cherry picker looking to win a bunch of meaningless little marathons and get a little pub from it, than EPO. Roids = recovery. Why run as slow as he does? Because what is the point of running any faster if he's already winning? Running faster just means more recovery time. Besides, we all know what a huge gulf there is between World Class, and Oly Qualifier. Even in his prime, with a drug budget rivaling Usain Bolt's, Engle would never have been close to world class. On the other hand, who really cares if he wants to gear up and cherry pick. If that's what gets his rocks off, I say have at it. Just as long as his self-promotion doesn't get too annoying. I'd gladly suffer ten Engles if Dean K would disappear. Let alone, Dane. |

No, it is actually impressive. To run that many 2:40ish marathons in a relatively compact period of time is darned impressive. Just because you can run a 2:20 doesnt mean your body could hold up and run 2:40-2:50 on most weekends without getting burned out or injured. Who cares what he does with his time and his life. If he enjoys it, great. You can say - he doesnt cheat. |

But it wasn't really a race for you. Just a training run. So you cherry-pick the win. Justify it however you want. I don't think I have seen Engle bitch when he gets beat by 20 either. What was your point with that? Regardless of your opinion, running back to back marathons and 5 back to back marathons under 3 hours is impressive and it is my opinion as well as several others. Engle competes more than you do so you may be faster (we have no proof of your times) but compared to Engle you are not competitive at all. Just an admitted one time cherry-picker who jogged to a win. Kudos to you. Compared to Engle you are a slacker. |

WTH? Saying you could do what Engle does and not doing it, yet still criticizing his feats as non-impressive is total bs. I'm tired of the coulda woulda shoulda crap which appears to be the mainstay of most LR arguments. If you could you would. Get out and prove that it's not that impressive by doing it better. Running your mouth will never trump what Engle has done with his legs. Run More, Chuckster! |
