I don't know the circumstances behind these transfers(Masters, Casey, and Hurysz(wherever he ends up) but I assume that there are two primary motives: 1) Running with a better team 2) More scholarship money available The way the landscape in track and field is going, it appears likely that three trends will continue. 1) The Ivy's will continue to "sign" good prospects as the financial aid packages make the ROI look attractive for qualified student/athletes. 2) The BCS conference schools will have the scholarship funds available for track and field/cross country athletes (notwithstanding the current situation at Maryland which is really of their own making). 3) State schools outside the BCS conferences will continue to feel pressure on their scholarship allotments and annual budgets. |

don't release them? that is the stupidest thing i've ever heard.. these are human beings for crying out loud, and you have no idea the true circumstances behind them wanting to leave.. obviously something isn't right. i am a huge fan of athletes rights, and i think it is insane that a coach can force you to sit out a whole year by not releasing you just for spite. |

"Coaches, grow a backbone and don't release them. Part of your job is to educate and teaching people that it's ok to be 100% self-centered is wrong." I 100% disagree. The percentage of high visibility star athletes transferring to a new college/university is miniscule. Personally, I hate moving. Packing up, leaving friends, favorite places, and moving to a strange place is difficult at best. When these kinds of moves occur, I have to believe that a lot of thought (soul searching) went into these decisions. I feel these things are reminiscent to a employee leaving for another job. You hate to see a star employee leave, but you're not going to sabotage their next job and their ability to make a living. If I was a track/cross country coach at a D1 school, I wouldn't interfere with these rare moves. If they're not happy, go somewhere else. And if a received a transfer, I would hope that he/she would be immediately released to run for me. Bottom line, a coach that refuses to release an athlete looks like a sore loser. |

I'll be in favor of athletes sitting out for a year when coaches also have to sit out for a year when then jump ship for a bigger paycheck or a more prestigious school. Or is it not "self-centered" when coaches abandon the athletes they recruited just to get a bigger paycheck? |

How far did you think Pat could have gotten under Dale Kennedy at Bozeman? I was surprised that he went to Montana in the first place. If you are a X-C skier, go to Bozeman, but a running talent like Pat, you need a better training environment and he needs to be surrounded by some more talent. If I were Kennedy, I would have released him in a heart beat as well. |

I agree. Athletes should be able to transfer if they want. its self centered of coaches if they don't release them. They should let them go and focus on the athletes they are currently training. |

You obviously don't get it and that is part of the problem with all of this. So many coaches put everything into coaching. It is their career and how they put food on the table. There is a big difference between an athlete and a coach in this situation. |

Interpretation: Coaches coach for money and only money. They can be as greedy and self centered as they want. Athletes should only think and act in the coach's best interest. |
