Decided to start a 2012 thread. C/M Runner feel free to begin the chatter. I'll go first. Obviously 2 team battle Cornell vs Princeton Princeton looks like they got some solid freshmen sprinters/jumpers/hurdlers, a little light in throws, and stacked as usual in mid distance/distance. Watch out for their DMR this year! Princeton's SUB 1:53/4:05/48.0 Guys 1:48.66/4:01.03 Callahan 1:48.26/46.95 Dinkins 4:00.64 Cabral 1:52.57/4:01 (2010 PennRelays split) Van Ackeren 3:44.69 (1500) Stilin 47.14 Hopkins Extra 800M Depth 1:50.72 (HS PR) Paternostro 1:51.68 Sawadogo 1:52.17 Williams 1:52.49 Palmisano 1:52.60 (HS PR) Eggleton Cornell needs to rack up points in heptathalon/throws/shorts sprints to have a chance |

All teams except Columbia have done a meet so far this season. I think Columbia can give Princeton and Cornell a run for their money. It's too bad we still need to wait until this weekend to see how their opener goes... I'm actually surprised by the men's shot put right now. Currently, there are 4 guys who have already thrown over 17 meters (over 55-9), two of which are freshmen (the better one is close to 18 meters), and there is a third frosh who is just shy of 17 meters. Dave Slovenski has already broken the league indoor PV record in his first meet, leaping 17-5. I wonder how many more times this season he will break it? Nico Weiler was still pretty rusty last year after taking a year off, so I wonder if anyone can really give Dave a jump for his money. Maalik Reynolds will have some competition in the high jump this year. Cornell got a Navy transfer, Montez Blair, who has jumped 7-3 (Maalik jumped 7-2.25 in his opener). Can't discuss too much in the distance races yet since the fast times do not come up in February. |

Columbia men don't have any shot team wise but if they have a big meet they can help Cornell significantly. Columbia has the potential to break up Princeton fairly soundly in every event over 500m. Don't discount their DMR either with Feigen (3:43 as a soph) on the 1200m and Merber on the Mile. |

Where's Hollimon at? Two meets no appearance. If he's out Princeton might be in some trouble. Might be last piece of the puzzle Cornell needs to take back the indoor title - especially if they can capitalize on Princeton's new found weakness in the throws with Abyad and Pearce gone. |

Could be recovering from a pre-season injury... they have a meet this weekend so he could be running in that. Any word on if Conor McCullough is ever coming back to Princeton? The last I heard he had been training back home in CA and he threw once in Ireland last spring. |

I concur. I did copy the OP from the other thread (by "BRF") and paste it below (btw, Ivy performance list at http://tfrrs.org/lists/787.html ) : ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Early days for a thread like this, but maybe people have some insight into the nascent season. [I won't be back on the boards until Feb. at earliest, but would hope to catch up a bit when I do return.] With just one meet's results (http://cornellbigred.com/news/2011/12/3/MTRACK_1203114830.aspx), and minus most of the distance runners and many of the mid-distance people, it's tough to say much about how Cornell shapes up vis-à-vis the rest of the League (http://tfrrs.org/lists/787.html), esp. in the individual flat running events. The other events showed the usual season-opening mix of good and not-so. For the men, the Big Red heptathletes made their usual strong showing, and Cornell should once again do real damage in the indoor/outdoor multis. Bob Belden looks strong in the throws; CU's young throws coach brought in some great talent, and it'll be interesting to see whether her frosh can develop fast enough with the college weights to be scoring threats. The story in the jumps was rookie Montez Blair, whose huge 2.22m HJ was a school record and only 2cm away from an NCAA auto qualifier. The rest of the jumps showed their usual depth, though with no spectacular marks. The depth may be needed to offset a spotty showing in the straightaway races, where CU's returning hurdlers were no-shows (Huber only put the shot). On the women's side, another top jump mark (Hewitt's 6.16 in the LJ) highlighted an otherwise solid, but mostly unspectacular, showing. The Red have good depth in most events, but a few top recruits in the jumps and esp. throws (a thin area last year) did not compete in the Dec. meet. _____________________________________________________________ Mostly out-of-thin-air Heps predictions: On the men's side, Princeton looks very hard to beat: quality in depth. As in the past several years, Cornell seems to be PU's only potential competition. Is another men's team showing signs of being ready to step up? For the women, you pick 'em--but after yet another outstanding recruiting season, Columbia may have all the guns it needs, esp. indoors. After last year's more competitive outdoor meet, however, the Lions could face solid competition from teams besides Princeton and Cornell--Brown, in particular, seems like it could be a threat. I'll hope to get to Ithaca to see the meet. Until then, enjoy the season... |

HepsTrack is back online. Also, Kyle Merber (Columbia) is set to run in the Wanamaker Mile. |
| seriously?!? |

Is this Hollimon thing legit? Taking time off from school to train for the olympics?? How could anyone think that's a good idea?? Seems like his head has gotten a bit big from blowing the doors off Ivy league kids and forgotten that he's never broken 46 in the 400. (This is assuming he doesn't have non-US citizenship) |

Another post imported from the mislabeled thread--this one from "scoos" on 1/9/12: ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Not everyone in the Ivy League has competed so far, but from I would imagine things could be very interesting on the Women's side, as I agree that there is a three way race. On the Men's side, it will be an uphill battle for Cornell, but Princeton is not a lock quite yet. On the Cornell throws end of things, I do know Freshmen Stephen Mozia threw 17.99 at the Cornell meet this weekend, which puts him at 4th in the nation currently, and from what I am told, Belden was close on his heels but scratched his big throws. On the women's side, Victoria Imbessi finally got her Indoor Shot record with 48', which is pretty impressive when you consider her main event is javelin. I am excited to see how the rest of the team comes along. Lots of talent on that squad and Coach Johnson (not RoJo for you Lets Run fanatics) knows what she is doing with her throwers. Expect lots of RED on the podium these next years. |

I'm glad to see that HepsTrack.com is back in operation. I don't think there's much/any income for Brett from that site, so it qualifies as a real labor of love. Good for him! (Good for us, too...) |

So, anything interesting/useful happen over the weekend? I saw that Cornell got a partial squad to Penn State, but didn't notice any special performances (didn't look long, either). Distancemen (and most mid-) absent--dunno whether they ran elsewhere or aren't competing yet(? It's the middle of January!). |

Peter Callahan (Pr) tried to break the 4-min/mile barrier at the SNATA #1 (Donn Cabral paced through the 800m). Callahan didn't hit it though (4:03.xx). Korir of Iona won the race. |

considering Cabral took them through 1200 in 3:07, I don't think this was a sub 4 attempt. Just a guess though unless Coach wanted them to practice closing in under 53. |

Huh, I had heard that it was a sub-4 attempt as Korir of Iona was trying to break the barrier too (or so Brett told me). |
